The town has a long and interesting history dating back to the 11th Century when it was established as the Kingdom of Khelang Nakorn. It is home to the Wat Phra Thart Lampang Luang temple which for three decades housed the Emerald Buddha Statue which was later kept in the Wat Chedi Luang temple in the City of Chang Mai. Lampang is unique in many ways having kept intact most of its culture and traditions. The City is famous for its horse drawn carriages which are still used as a means of transport ferrying locals to and from the market place and around town. These carriages can also be hired by tourists and are a good way of viewing various sites within the City.
