A 4-hour road trip divides Arequipa city
from 'The Deepest Canyon in the World'. Although Colca Canyon's walls are not as vertical as those of the Grand Canyon, it is twice as deep with 10,300ft (3,050m) depth. Most of the accomodations are found at lower altitudes though, like Yanque town
, The Colca Valley
(some facing the river) and Chivay town
. When thinking of a trip to Colca
, 'come for the Condors, stay for the Valley' could be a slogan that defines the wide variety of activities that are found around, like bathing on thermal waters, trekking, biking, hiking, river rafting or even lazy-ing around, Colca will keep nature lovers entertained for the lenght of their visit. If you are lucky, you will get to see the 'Flying of the Condors'
at Cruz del Condor (Condor's Cross), a must-see spot where the canyon floor is 3,960 feet (1,200 m) below the rim of the canyon. Given the distance and driving time from Arequipa city, a 2-night stay is recommended, however if you are short of time, a 1 night stay will also do the trick. For those who want to combine the Colca Canyon with Lake Titicaca
, we strongly suggest to take ground transportation from Chivay town in Colca to Puno city in the Titicaca shores. Keep in mind, you can also continue to Cuzco city
after staying in the Lake Titicaca area. Otherwise, you will need to go back to Arequipa
to connect with your next destination.
