Peru - Lake Titicaca Home > Peru > Lake Titicaca
Located right on the border between Peru and Bolivia, at 12,500 feet above sea level, Lake Titicaca is the highest navigable lake in the world, in addition to being (by volume of water) the largest lake in South America. Puno city and its lake shores will be your home while visiting. There are several ways to arrive to Puno/Lake Titicaca. By air, arriving at Juliaca airport (about 1 hour from Puno city); By Train, on an 8-hour ride from Cuzco; and By Bus, either coming from Cuzco or from Colca Canyon in Arequipa. Our suggested itineraries include all sort of transportation combos for your selection. Usually 2 nights stay will allow you to enjoy the Lake and its surroundings. There is a Full Day Tour that is a must, which includes a visit to the floating Uros Islands, a group of dried totora man-made islets inhabited by the Uru indigenous tribe; and Taquile Island, a place that seems to have stopped in time, where locals still live like their ancestor did centuries ago. No cars, no hotels, the use of candles or flashlights powered by batteries are part of the way of Taquilenos living. Local Culture and astonishing views of the Lake are guaranteed on this tour. On the way from Puno city to Juliaca airport, you will find the Sillustani Tombs, a pre-Inca archaeological site that consist of tall towers made of big polished dry stones. You may select your Lake Titicaca tours while customizing any of our suggested itineraries.
