Getting Around In Belize
Most visitors to Belize arrive at the Philip Goldson International Airport in Belize City, which serves as a central hub for the rest of this remarkable country. The majority of destinations in Belize can be accessed by air, road, or by boat. The following information can help you choose the transportation options that are best suited to your vacation plans, and personal preferences:
Ground Transportation
Belize is a small country, and ground transportation is therefore a very popular way to get around. Depending upon your itinerary, there may be various alternatives for transfers and travel between destinations. In the booking process you will generally be selecting from the following categories:
Private Transfer:
Whether transferring from the airport to your hotel, or traveling to one of Belize's spectacular destinations the private vehicle option, with an experienced driver, is the best way to avoid stressful situations, and insure that your vacation will begin as soon as you arrive in Belize city. Vehicles are modern and comfortable, with air conditioning and internal radio communications. When traveling long distances you can stop to take pictures, observe places of interest along the way, and there are no baggage restrictions to contend with. (see air transportation). We recommend this method of travel because it is the most convenient, and relaxing way to enhance your vacation experience, and when you are happy, we have succeeded in providing the best possible service.
Shared Transfer:
Shared services make multiple stops and we cannot control the order in which the stops are made, and may involve inconvenient scheduling, so we don't advise or provide shared transfers in Belize.
Car Rental:
If you are an independent traveler, and don't mind navigating Belize's inconsistent road conditions, then a car rental may be a good choice for you, and we offer a number of self driving itineraries, and excellent 4 wheel drive vehicles, but keep in mind that many of the roads in Belize are unmaintained, and extreme caution needs to be used at all times, especially if it is necessary to drive at night. Also, keep in mind that signs and directions are frequently misleading, so be sure to be prepared with high quality maps, and GPS if available. Our preferred rental company in Belize is Budget Rent a Car. See Details
Air Travel
Many of Belize's popular destinations have local airports or airstrips, and are serviced primarily by two domestic carriers, Maya, and Tropic Air. Travel by air can significantly reduce travel time, and we recommend it to reach certain destinations, but because Belize is a small country it can frequently be more expensive and require multiple transfers. In addition, because these are generally small planes (some with only 6 seats) passengers are subject to strict luggage restrictions which are typically two bags with a maximum weight of 70lbs per passenger. Carry-on bags may need to be checked, and excess bags can result in an additional seat charge. So although air travel can be convenient, it may not always be the right choice for you and your party.
