How do I get from the airport to my hotel?

The Alice Springs Airport is located 9.3 miles away from the town center of Alice Springs. There are flights offered through Qantas and Virgin Australia that fly direct from Adelaide and Darwin and other cities. There are shuttle buses at the airport along with taxis and rental cars to reach your final destination.

If you have not booked a private transfer through us then you have a few options including taxis, motorbike taxis, buses and rental cars to get you to the city center.

What types of transportation can I find at the airport?

There are taxis available at the airport, the taxi rank can be found outside the main terminal. Taxis run on meters and a trip into the center of town will cost approximately $30. There are several rental car agencies found at the airport, the rental car desk is located inside the terminal. Avis, Europcar, Hertz, Budget, and Thrifty are available.

The Ghan train travels to Alice Springs from different cities in Australia including Sydney, Adelaide, and Darwin. Train Services can take 24 hours (Adelaide-Alice) and longer due to the remote location of Alice Springs. Visit www.gsr.com.au for more information.

How do I get around the city using public transportation?

Public transportation options are limited in Alice Springs there are public buses, a hop-on hop-off bus tour and some taxis found in town. Buses depart from the Yeperenye Shopping Center on Hartley Street and a single bus ticket costs around $3 for three hours of unlimited travel, a one day ticket costs about $7. Buses run every 30 minutes Monday through Friday and on Saturday mornings with three main routes offered within the city.

The Alice Wanderer bus is the hop-on hop-off bus tour that travels to the major sights in town with a built-in tour guide giving commentary on the sights. The main stop is at the corner of Gregory Terrace and Railway Terrace. The tour costs about $42 and lasts over an hour, tickets can be purchased on board the bus.

Should I rent a car when visiting Alice Springs?

It is a good idea to consider renting a car while visiting Alice Springs, it provides visitors a practical way to get around the remote area. Alice Springs is a long way away from everywhere and it can take hours and hundreds of miles to reach other big cities in the country. The MacDonnell Ranges, Uluru and Kings Canyon are worth visiting and can be reached by car. Be sure to check with the Alice Springs Visitor Information Center and ask about their unlimited kilometers deal for rental cars.

How do I call/hail a taxi?

There are taxi services found in Alice Spring and many can be found outside the Visitors Center and on Gregory Terrace. Taxis in town can be expensive costing a minimum of $4 and $2 per 0.62 miles. Taxis can be ordered by phone tel. 08-8952-1877.

Is Alice Springs a walking city?

Yes, the downtown area of Alice Springs is easy enough to explore on foot. The focal point in town is Todd Mall where a selection of Aboriginal art galleries and community events are held. The downtown is filled with historic buildings including the Overland Telegraph Station and the Old Courthouse, beautiful stone buildings that now house hotels, restaurants, and shops.

Can I ride a bike in Alice Springs?

Alice Springs is a great place to ride a bike. The town is mostly flat and riding a bike is one of the best ways to get around. There are plenty of bicycle rentals available and bikes can be hired for around $25 a day. Many hotels and guesthouses have bikes for rent along with My Ride which is a rental company in town and Longhorn Bikes, both local companies. There are many sealed bike paths throughout the town and also options to ride a few miles outside of town on the provided paths.

Is Alice Springs a dangerous city, is there anything I should be aware of?

Alice Springs is one of the safest places to visit in the world, just like visiting any other city in the world, be sure to keep your street smarts and keep your items safe when you are out and about, use caution when walking in remote areas at night.

What are some popular areas for shopping?

The town of Alice Springs is one of the best locations in Australia to buy Aboriginal Arts and crafts. Visitors can look to buy unique items such as didgeridoos, spears, clapping sticks, and coolamons. There are original artworks on sale by world-renowned painters that can cost thousands of dollars and paintings that are more affordable. Mbantua Aboriginal Art Gallery is a great place to see and buy Aboriginal Art, the artwork comes from authentic pieces from Utopia. Papunya Tula Artists also sells paintings and linen from Papunya, a settlement located 150 miles northwest of town. There are major supermarkets in town along with a market and chain stores such as Target and K-Mart.

What is the best time to visit Alice Springs?

Alice Springs features a hot desert climate with hot summers and cold winters. The summer months are from December to February with average daily temperatures that range from 60-95 degrees, however, the temps can climb as high as 104!!! Winter is June to August with average daily temperatures ranging from 41-68 degrees. July is the coldest month with temperatures dropping below 0, and January is the wettest month. The fall from March to May is one of the best times to visit Alice Springs with warm days and cool nights and temperature averages between 54-81 degrees. June through August is the tourist peak season in Alice Springs, which means the hotels and other accommodations fill up fast and tourist attractions can be busy with long lines.

What type of festivals do they have in Alice Springs?

The Alice Desert Festival, the Red Center NATS, Parrtjima, the Camel Cup, the Henley-on-Todd Regatta, the Beanie Festival, and the Finke Desert RAce are amongst a few of the festivals held annually in Alice Springs. The festivals are held at the town`s focal point, Todd Mall along with several Aboriginal Art Galleries and other community events.

The Australian dollar (AU$) is the official currency of Australia. Cash can be exchanged at many local banks, hotels and the airport. ATMs are widespread in the city but may be limited in more remote towns and the Outback.

What is the food like?

The town of Alice Springs has a good offering of places to eat with a varied restaurant scene, fast food, and options for takeaway. There are supermarkets in town such as Ling`s Supermarket, which allows visitors to pick up groceries and Asian food including noodles, rice, and vegetarian options. Many of the restaurants are family owned and operated and a great place to stop in for some delicious grub. There are the usual international fast-food chains including McDonald`s, KFC, Hungry Jacks, and Red Rooster. La Casalinga is a great pizza joint in town, it has been around for 20 years and serves up some delicious pies.

What is the nightlife like?

There are a few bars and watering holes location in Alice Springs which are the perfect place for a drink after a long day of exploring the Red Center. There are places offering live music at night along with pool tables, Todd Tavern is a great local place to enjoy some tunes and The Rock Bar offers a nice outdoor beer garden. The pedestrian-friendly street of Todd Mall offers a few options for some nightlife including sports pubs.
