Kansas is located smack in the center of the United States, and the state has been integral to so many periods of expansion in this country. It was located at the crossroads of many 19th-century pioneer trails, and as the West was settled, Kansas became a farming state. For many decades it produced all of the U.S.'s wheat for domestic consumption, earning it the name "The Nation's Breadbasket". Many of Kansas's top tourist attractions are located along either the Old West trails such as the Santa Fe Trail and the Oregon Trail, or newer "trails" such as Route 66, "The Mother Road".
