Scottsbluff is the largest city in the Nebraska Panhandle, and a stop along a number of pioneer trails in the 19th century, such as the Oregon Trail, the California Trail, the Mormon Trail, and the Pony Express mail service. Many sights associated with this era are located within an hour`s drive of town, the most notable of these being two dramatic rock formations: Scotts Bluff, from which the town was named, and Chimney Rock, which are both national monuments and historic sites. Other Trails-era sights around Scottsbluff that are worth visiting include Fort Mitchell, Robidoux Pass, Courthouse and Jail Rocks, Ash Hollow, and Windlass Hill.
