The Adirondack Mountains comprise a region of upstate New York situated to the west of two large lakes, Lake Champlain and Lake George. The gateway cities to the Adirondacks, both located on Interstate 87, are Saratoga Springs in the south and Plattsburgh in the north. Highlights include state parks such as High Peaks Wilderness, including Mount Marcy, and the lake towns such as Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, Tupper Lake, Indian Lake, and Lake George. Its boundaries correspond roughly to the boundaries of Adirondack Park. They cover about 5,000 square miles. The mountains form a roughly circular dome, about 160 miles in diameter and about 1 mile high.
