Central Transdanubia consists of three Hungarian counties, of which the northern portions are sandwiched between the cities of Gyor to the west and Budapest to the east. The area stretches to the south and southwest to the shores of Lake Balaton, and the region also includes another popular lakeside resort destination, Lake Velence. The region`s largest city is Székesfehérvár, which once served as the capital of the Kingdom of Hungary. One of the largest basilicas in Europe was located here, and over a dozen Kings of Hungary are buried on the ruined grounds. There are six cities and towns located along the shores of Hungary`s second most-popular tourist destination, the sunny Lake Balaton -- Siofok, the unofficial `capital`; Keszthely, the lake`s largest city; Balatonalmádi and Balatonfüred, towns that are a bit quieter than the action you will find in Siofok; and the nearby spa towns of Hévíz (home to the largest thermal lake in Europe) and Zalakaros.
