Ballinasloe (meaning the mouth of the ford of the crowds in Irish) reflects that the town developed as a crossing point on the River Suck. The town is well-known for the Ballinasloe Fair, which is one of the oldest horse fairs in Europe, dating from the eighth century CE. Ballinasloe makes a good base for exploring eastern County Galway.
