Bistrita, in northern Romania, was founded by the Saxons in the twelfth century. Remnants of the early days of Bistrita can be found throughout the city, perhaps most notably at the 13th-century Minorite Monastery. Bistrita`s synagogue, one of the largest in Transylvania, is the center of a Jewish community that once numbered in the tens of thousands. The Evangelical Church`s bell tower offers great views of the city below.
