Szczecin, on the Oder River, is West Pomerania`s capital and the largest city in northwestern Poland. Settled in the ninth century, it is one of Poland`s oldest cities. You can view a panorama of the city from the Oder riverbank at Chrobry Embankment, where the Contemporary Theatre and the Maritime Branch of the National Museum are located. Away from the riverbank, in the Old Town, you will notice a stately Mannerist palace, the Ducal Castle, where the dukes who ruled the Duchy of Pomerania lived for five centuries. You will get a chance to learn about Szczecin`s long history and culture, and its numerous rulers, at the National Museum`s special history and culture branch at the Old Town Hall.
