Kalambaka (The Meteora)
The mountaintop monasteries at Meteora (meaning 'suspended in the air') are a marvel of human creativity. Located in the heart of the Greece, these iconic buildings perched on rocky cliffs have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988, and are among the most fascinating monasteries in the world. The monasteries that sit on top of these rocks make up the second most important monastic community in Greece, after Mount Athos in Halkidiki. Originally there were 24 monasteries, where today only six remain, and are still inhabited by 60 monks and nuns.
