How do I get to the Cameron Highlands?

Cameron Highlands does not have an airport. The closest airport is in Kuala Lumpur, which is located about 2-3 hours away by car. The easiest way to reach the region is to fly to Kuala Lumpur and drive to the highlands.

What types of transportation can I find at the airport?

Renting your own car and driving from Kuala Lumpur airport and driving to the Cameron Highlands region. The drive will take around 3 hours, there are buses available that make the journey and leave from the Terminal Bersepadu Selatan to Tanah Rata town costing around RM35. The bus ride will take around 4 hours.

How do I get from the bus station to my hotel?

One in the main tourist town of Tanah Rata at the small bus station which has a few different transport options to reach your hotel. There are taxis and shuttle buses if walking is not an option to reach your destination.

How do I get around the city using public transportation?

The main ways to get around the Cameron Highlands are walking, shuttle bus and taxis, unless you have your own vehicle. It is 2.5 miles on foot from the main town of Tanah Rata to Brinchang which would take about an hour.

Shuttle buses leave from Tanah Rata traveling through Brinchang to Kampung Raja costing around RM2.

There is a local bus that runs on the hour and travels between the bus station in Tanah Rata to Bringchang, Kea Farm, Tringkap, Kuala Terla, and Kampung Raja. The bus fare costs around RM2 and can increase by distance, the last bus leaves at 6:30 pm, the first starts at 6:30 am.

There are many tours offered in the Cameron Highlands with transportation provided.

Should I rent a car in the Cameron Highlands?

Renting your own car when visiting the Cameron Highlands can be a good idea to explore the region on your own at your own pace. Cars can be rented from the Kuala Lumpur airport where visitors can make the drive to the highlands on their own time and be flexible and stop along the way.

How do I call/hail a taxi?

There are plenty of taxis available in the main town of Tanah Rata. They can be found outside hotels, shops and tourist attractions. A taxi can be the fastest and easiest way to get around and fares cost around RM15 for a short ride. Three hours of sightseeing can cost about RM75. Taxis are the only way to get around the town at night and are available from about 6:00 am until 10:00 pm.

Is Cameron Highlands a walking city?

The Cameron Highlands is a wonderful walking destination with many opportunities to get out and explore so many different areas on foot. Walking is one of the best ways to see the area for example visitors can take a tour of the famous Boh Tea Plantation and walk to spectacular hidden waterfalls and through the enchanting Mossy Forest. The main town of Tanah Rata is the base for exploring the Cameron Highlands area, the town can be explored on foot easily where restaurants, shops, banks and more can be found.

Can I ride a bike in the Cameron Highlands?

Bikes can be rented from most of the hotels found in the main town of Tanah Rata and taking a bike ride around town can be a great way to explore.

Is Cameron Highlands a dangerous area, is there anything I should be aware of?

The Cameron Highlands is remarkably safe and is a safe holiday destination. The crime rate is relatively low and crimes against visitors are practically unheard of but petty theft is becoming more common in the built up areas. Keep your wits about you and practice street smarts when out sightseeing.

What are some popular areas for shopping?

There isn’t much shopping to do in the Cameron Highlands, but the area is famous for its tea production so lots of tea products can be found in the area. Fresh produce like vibrant fruits and vegetables such as Cameronian apples, oranges and passion fruit that come from the farms and plantations in the region. There are local markets found in the main town or Tanah Rata along with roadside stalls and the local Multicrops Central Market. There is a great night market in Brinchang which is found in the Central Square where shoppers can pick up local snacks, souvenirs and knick knacks.

What is the best time to visit Cameron Highlands?

The Cameron Highlands climate is on the border between tropical rainforest and subtropical highland climate. There is a lot of rain in the highlands, it rains throughout the year with the driest time between February to April. Peak season is May through September when the region can be incredibly crowded. Average annual temperatures range between 64 degrees and temperatures rarely rise above 77 degrees and can drop as low as 48 degrees at night.

I don`t speak Malay will there be many people who speak English?

The official language spoken in the Cameron Highlands is Bahasa Malaysia (Malay). English is widely spoken throughout the country in hotels, restaurants and other tourist related areas. We recommend that you get a good English - Malaysian guidebook and familiarize yourself with common phrases such as hello, goodbye, please, thank you, excuse me and numbers 1 - 10.

What is the currency? Can I pay/tip in US dollars?

The currency in the Cameron Highlands is the Malaysian ringgit (RM). Dollars are not accepted, we advise you exchange your dollars for ringgit before arriving. There are exchange counters at the international airports, but not at domestic airports. Banks are available normally from 8 am until 3 pm. And exchange offices can be found in the main towns.

What is the food like?

The different types of cuisine offered in the Cameron Highlands includes Malay, Chinese, Indian, Western and typical English dishes. There is a wide variety of restaurants to choose from in the Cameron Highlands as well as in the main towns of Tanah Rata and Brinchang. The highlands are known for the Steamboat Cuisine inspired by European fondue in the olden days. The dish consists of a large bowl of broth with ingredients including meat, vegetables, noodles, fish balls and tofu. It is a great hearty bowl and perfect after a day of hiking in the highlands.

The majority of the restaurants in the area can be found in the main town of Tanah Rata with options such as Chinese, Malay and english breakfasts and tea with scones. British style high teas can be found all over the region including scones, jam and clotted cream. The Ye Olde Smokehouse is a favorite restaurant serving up delicious British Sunday Dinners.

What is the nightlife like?

There isn`t much as far as nightlife in the area, a few bars, pubs and restaurants serving drinks can be found in the main town of Tanah Rata. Jungle Bar is a jungle themed bar that has a bon fire each night and broadcasts live football matches.

What should I do if I need medical assistance or need to go to the hospital?

If you need emergency services while in Japan dial 110 for the police or 119 to call an ambulance or report a fire.
