GETTING AROUND - HAKONE

By Foot

There is an abundance of stunning outdoor scenic walks to take in Hakone. Visitors can stroll around the beautiful Lake Ashi and visit the many sights and attractions the lake has to offer. Hiking in the surrounding mountains is a wonderful way to spend time with nature. Hakone-Izu National Park offers many hiking opportunities with different levels of difficulty and breathtaking views. There are several popular hiking spots in the region including Mount Kintoki and Mount Kamiyama with views of the stunning Mount Fuji.

By Bicycle

It is possible to ride a bike around many of the beautiful idyllic settings found in and around Hakone. Mountain biking can be a popular activity through the trails found in Hakone-Izu National Park. Taking a bicycle ride along the shores of Lake Ashi is the perfect pastime. There are several beautiful locations around Hakone that are great for a bike ride and there are several locations where bikes can be rented including a number of locations around the lake. The beautiful natural Sengokuhara Forest of Hakone is a great location for a mountain bike ride.

By Train

There are a total of seven train stations in Hakone and getting around the city and surrounding regions by train are one of the most popular forms of transportation. Many of the trains in Hakone travel through the surrounding mountains and valleys providing passengers with some of the most spectacular scenic views in all of Japan.

The Hakone Tozan Railway travels from Odawara all the way to Gora Station, where passengers can then catch the cable car which travels to Owakundani.

The Odakyu Railways `Romance Car` is one of the ways passengers can travel from Shinjuku Station directly to Hakone-Yumoto Station which lies in the heart of the city. The one-way journey takes a scenic 90-minute ride and the Hakone Rail Pass can be used.

By Bus

There is an excellent bus system in the city of Hakone with around 14 different bus routes, the Hakone Tozan Bus Information Office where visitors can pick up the paper Hakone Bus Trip Maps. Buses in the city are listed with letters for different routes, bus stops feature the letter of your route

There are different highway buses that operate every 30 minutes between Tokyo`s Shinjuku Station to Lake Ashi in Hakone, the journey takes around 2 hours. There are also buses that travel between Haneda Airport to Hakone taking about 2 ½ hours.

By Taxi

Taxi stands in Hakone can mostly be found outside the main train stations. Taxi prices are authorized by the government and fares are generally calculated by distance.

By Ropeway

The Hakone Ropeway, cable car or funicular in Hakone connects Togendai and Sounzan. The cable car travels over the peaks and valleys of Hakone for 2 ½ miles, it soars over the sulfur smoke bubbling landscapes of Owakundani Valley at 200 feet and travels to a range of mountain towns. Passengers can enjoy the spectacular scenery the unfolds below including scenes of Lake Ashi and Mount Fuji, along with forests and Hakone`s great outdoors.

By Sightseeing Cruise

The Hakone Sightseeing Cruise takes passengers on a journey on a colorful pirate ship across Lake Ashi, between Togendai-ko and Hakonemachi-ko. Riders can enjoy breathtaking views of Hakone`s outdoors including views of the floating Torii gate and Mount Fuji. The ship is modeled after British and French military ships and calls in at several ports along the lake.
