OKINAWA - GETTING AROUND

By Taxi

There are taxi`s on the island that are available 24 hours a day. Taxis are metered and fares start around ¥500 for the first mile and then increase by ¥60 thereafter. There is an additional 20% surcharge from 10 pm to 5 am. A trip from Naha city to the Churaumi Aquarium on the northwest coast costs approximately ¥15,000.

By Bus

Buses are one of the main forms of transportation in Okinawa and a popular way to get around, the bus network is extensive. The island is quite large and traveling from the main gateway in Naha to the northern end of the island takes 2-3 hours, bus fares depend upon the distance traveled and bus stops are clearly marked with timetables posted. Bus #111 connects passengers from the airport in Naha to the Naha bus terminal and the Nago bus terminal in the north. City bus fares start around ¥220.

By Monorail

The monorail travels around Naha City and is a great option to see the capital city with frequent trains running every 10 - 15 minutes connecting passengers to major attractions in the downtown area. Tickets cost between ¥110 to ¥300 depending upon the total distance traveled, and 24 or 48-hour passes can be purchased for around 700 and ¥1,200.

By Ferry

There is a ferry on the island that travels from Naha Port to Kagoshima making stops at the Motobu Port situated on Motobu Peninsula, travel time is two hours and the cost is approximately ¥2,400.

By Car

A rental car is a good way to travel around the island and visit destinations that are outside of Naha at your own pace. There are plenty of rental car options found at the airport and in the major cities and the Okinawa Expressway extends from Naha to Nago. Traffic is heavy during the summer months and it can take upwards of over an hour just to get from Naha airport to Shuri (which is a 27-minute ride on the monorail), parking on the island tends to be very expensive.

By Foot

The island of Okinawa is only 5 miles wide and 65 miles long, walking along the coastal areas and attractions including castle ruins are one of the best ways to explore the culture and history the city has to offer. Many attractions can be reached by foot from Naha including the Shikina-en Gardens and the Shuri Castle which are both great locations to wander around and enjoy the beauty and surroundings. Walk along the beautiful beaches along the turquoise blue shoreline and soak up the sun. Wander around the nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites found in Okinawa.
