GETTING AROUND - SAN IGNACIO

By Walking

The roads around town are quite walkable, and traffic is light. Most everything is within a 5- minute walk from downtown. There is really no reason to drive. The town is foot-scaled so walking is your best bet for getting about and really experiencing the town. Keep in mind that you will need to find transportation to reach the major attractions in the area.

By Taxi

If you would like a cab, ask your hotel reception or call Cayo Taxi Association (tel 501-824-2196) or San Ignacio Taxi Stand (tel 501-824-2155). Taxi fares around Cayo should cost you as follows: about BZ$6 around town, about BZ$18 between San Ignacio and Bullet Tree Falls, and about BZ$55 between San Ignacio and Chaa Creek. Collective taxis run between San Ignacio and Xunantunich Mayan Ruins; the cost is about BZ $6 per person. Remember, if you expect to stay late remember you may have to take a taxi back, and they can get increasingly more expensive later into the night.

By Rental Car

Renting a car is a great way to see the Belize mainland. If you want to drive yourself, particularly anywhere off the main highway, a four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended. A Four-wheel-drive vehicle will cost around BZ$150-BZ$200. Rental cars are available in Belize City and several agencies in San Ignacio.

By Bus

Frequent buses will take you to the entrances to most of the hotels listed below on Benque Viejo Road, as well as within walking distance of the Xunantunich ruins for about BZ$1. This offers a great way to get around in town.
