XI`AN - GETTING AROUND

By Taxi

One of the easiest ways to get around Xi`an is by taking a taxi. There are over 12,000 taxis operating in the city, you can hail a taxi from the street, find them outside major stations and attractions, or order one by phone from your hotel. Taxis are mostly green in color and fares start around ¥6 for the first 1.24 miles and increase by about ¥1.5 for every 0.62 miles afterward. Prices will increase slightly after 11 pm and it is always a good idea to have your destination written down in Chinese, as most drivers will not speak English. Rush hour and rain can cause major difficulties trying to track down an available taxi.

By Bus

There are several buses and stations in and around the city that travel to every corner of Xi`an along with the surrounding suburbs and attractions. You can one of the tourist buses to areas outside of the city such as The Terracotta Army Museum, Mount Hua, and the Huaqing Hot Springs. A popular tourist line is #610 that connects the railway station to the Bell Tower, Small Wild Goose Pagoda, Xi`an Museum, Shaanxi History Museum and the Giant Goose Pagoda. #609 and #611 also connect to major attractions and the #611 has the most frequent timetable. Bus fares generally cost about ¥2, exact change is needed and you pay on the bus.

By Metro

The metro in Xi`an is still developing with 3 lines currently up and running and a total of 17 lines that are said to be completed by 2030 and will cover over 342 miles. Line 1 runs from east to west and crosses Line 2 in the city center which runs from north to south and Line 3 runs northeast-southeast intersecting with both lines. A single ticket on the subway costs around ¥2 - ¥5 and goes up according to the total distance traveled.

By Bicycle

Riding a bicycle in Xi`an is one of the main forms of transportation for the locals and tourists. The streets of Xi`an are flat with a grid layout and four main streets head north, east, south and west from the heart of the city where the Ancient City Walls, The Bell and Drum Towers and located. Exploring this beautiful ancient city on two wheels offers visitors the opportunity to go at their own pace and stop at different attractions. One of the best rides in the city is the Ancient City Wall. There are several bicycle rentals situated in the city and along the wall and rates start around ¥1 - ¥5 depending on the number of hours you are renting for. The entire wall runs for about 9 miles and provides access to the inner city through different city gates and plenty of attraction located inside the inner city as well as beautiful parks that surround the area.

By Foot

Getting around Xi`an and its main attractions on foot are easy, with flat, narrow streets in the inner city and the surrounding city walls. Taking a stroll to explore on foot is the perfect way to see the sights. Many of the attractions located right in the heart of the city include The Bell Tower, The Drum Tower, The Grand Mosque, the Muslim Quarters, temples, restaurants, and shopping as well as nightlife. You can find most of what you are looking for within walking distance from one another.

By Train

Trains run from Xi`an to other cities throughout China, there are two railway stations located in the city. The Xi`an Railway Station is situated close to the North Gate of the city wall and services slow K-class trains. The Xi`an North Railway Station lis ocated on the outskirts of the city and services bullet trains to Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou.
