The center of town is easily explored on foot and is compact and pleasant for strolling.

If you are skiing, the Postbus service is free with your lift pass. This links the town with the ski station and other areas, such as Kapun. Routes start at the Postplatz bus station in the center of town. Popular routes are:

-71 Postplatz to Schmittenhohe ski center
-660 Postplatz to Kaprun and Kitzsteinhorn ski area

This region has fairly good transit options in the peak of summer and winter, with local buses servicing the local slopes. In winter, when most visitors are spending time on the slopes, buses are generally sufficient to use to get around. In the summer months, a car rental will make getting around easier, as buses are less frequent. The buses are still present in the summer, but generally speaking, visitors like to move around more and visit more mountains that all offer different summer activities. In the shoulder seasons, it is highly recommended to have a car because bus frequency is reduced or eliminated.

Main traffic routes and motorways take you from both cities to the Zell am See-Kaprun region. Coming from Salzburg, you can choose: either you take the route via the Tauernautobahn motorway through the Salzachtal Valley or via the so-called `Deutsche Eck` route. The drive via the motorway is a bit longer but more comfortable. The Deutsche Eck route is more scenic. When arriving via the motorway, you must purchase an Austrian Autobahnvignette (motorway badge). The Tauernautobahn motorway will also take you to the Zell am See-Kaprun region if you arrive from the south. Coming from eastern direction, take the A1 Westautobahn motorway. The German motorway A9 from Munich will take you across the border and in direction Zell am See-Kaprun if you travel from the north. If you arrive from Innsbruck in the west, take the A12 Inntalautobahn motorway first before exiting at Wörgl. From there, you take the main roads through the beautiful mountain landscape of Tyrol before you finally arrive in the wonderful Federal State of Salzburg.

Parking: Pay attention, when you are parking your car. The parking zones are for free only during night (after 6 PM till 8 AM) in the city center, however during the day you have to pay or use the short time zone. This means, that you display a paper with time of your arrival and you can stay there next 30 minutes. You can also use parking zones by the cable cars, during the day they are free of cost. However, after skiing you have to leave the parking zone. You cannot stay there during night.

Zell am See-Kaprun does not just have excellent railway links to all Austrian towns and cities; the Zell am See Train Station is directly in the town center and in walking distance to many hotels, cafes and restaurants. The trains of ÖBB (Austrian Railways) run in regular intervals. Especially attractive for winter sports enthusiasts: special ÖBB Saver Tickets take you from Vienna to a ski holiday in Zell am See-Kaprun at ticket prices starting from around €25 per person. The train connections from Salzburg, Innsbruck, Munich, Villach, Klagenfurt, Graz and various other towns are also convenient.

Travelling by train to Zell am See-Kaprun is becoming more popular and offers a scenic way to get to the region where you can look out the window at the stunning mountains, wonderful nature and breathtaking panoramas.
