HOBART - NEIGHBORHOODS
Central Hobart
Hobart City Center which is also referred to as the CBD (Central Business District) or Town is located between the Derwent River and the foothills of Mount Wellington. Collins Street, Elizabeth Street, Liverpool Street and Murray Street surround the city. Most of the streets are are one way streets and are very narrow with the exception of Elizabeth Street which is the main thoroughfare running north and south of the city center. The city center is one of the oldest areas of Hobart and includes low rise commercial buildings at the center with many important landmarks such as Franklin Square, the Town Hall, Theatre Royal, Parliament and Royal Hobart Hospital. Hobart is a very small city and most of the attractions are within walking distance of the city center.
Salamanca Place
Salamanca district is a popular tourist spot close to the city center. There are craft shops, galleries, street cafes and live entertainment. The area is renowned for its historic sandstone warehouses which nowaday`s house art studios and much more. Salamanca Place is known for its weekend market (Salamanca Market) with over 200 stalls featuring fresh produce, seafood, fine world class arts and crafts.
Waterfront
Hobart is a harbor town the `Waterfront` area is centered around Victoria Dock which is a working fishing harbor. The area was once a busy port has undergone considerable renovation. It is now one of the most fashionable areas offering superb restaurants, street cafes, shops and popular nightlife. Head for Elizabeth St Pier for some popular spots to eat and drink. An area called The Gasworks Complex is situated on the waterfront and was previously an industrial area that now offers shops, museums and much more. Constitution Dock is the home of the annual Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race held at New Year and the Taste of Tasmania takes place this time of year.
Queens Domain
The Queens domain is a hilly area located north - east of the CBD traditionally known as the land that `belongs to the people` and known as `The Domain` to the locals. It was originally reserved for use of the governor implementing building restrictions on the hill. Now the area features playing grounds, picnic areas, barbecues and wildlife reserves with magnificent views of the city center and the river. The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, Government House and The Hobart Cenotaph are all located around this area.
Mount Wellington
Mount Wellington is a mountain that rises 4,170 ft above sea level in the southeast region with Hobart nestled in its foothills. Pinnacle Road is a narrow winding road that leads up to the summit where there is an enclosed lookout area providing some of the most spectacular views of the city and surrounding areas. The mountain is frequently covered in snow and the summit can be cold and windy even in the summer months.There are many outdoor attractions to explore on the mountain including walking, biking and hiking trails featuring enchanting forests,waterfalls and the amazing cliff of dolerite.
Battery Point
Battery point is the historic center of the city located just south of the CBD and known as the local government area of Hobart. The neighborhood is named after the battery of guns established in 1818 as part of Hobart`s coastal defenses. It is the city`s most prestigious area with grand mansions, stone cottages, historic houses with tea rooms and small shops interspersed between the buildings. The area`s most significant site is Arthur Circus, Australia`s only circus. Battery Point can be accessed from Salamanca from the 175 year old Kelly`s Steps and via Hampden Road.
