Costa Rica - Birding
close X
The Quetzal is one of the most spectacular and widely admired birds of the New World. The indigenous Mayans and Aztecs called it "holy" and featured it in sculptures next to their gods. For birdwatchers and nature lovers alike, this bird is worth a trip to Costa Rica, the best country to see the resplendent bird in its natural habitat in the elevated cloud forests.
Birding Destinations
Featured as the 'Central Valley South', an area of unspoiled surroundings. Among its massive oak trees and diverse wildlife, lives one of Costa Rica's most famous inhabitants; the spectacular Quetzal, one of the most striking and mythical birds in the world.
One of the most extraordinary and important nature reserves in the world. With thousands of species of animals, birds, and plants, including over 300 types of orchids alone, a true bird-watchers paradise.
One of the most visited National Parks in Costa Rica. Hosts more than 170 species of reptiles/amphibians, 375 species of birds, 125 types of mammals, and literally thousands of different trees and plants.
A premier eco-tourist destination in all of Costa Rica. Comprised to a large degree by the wildly beautiful Corcovado National Park where you'll find mangrove swamps, palm groves, lagoons, montane forests, exotic beaches, and the largest primary lowland rainforest in the world. Habitat for huge numbers of bird, marine and mammal species.
Although white water rafting in Sarapiqui River is the main draw; the lush vegetation and phenomenal assortment of exotic birds, including the nearly extinct Green Macaw, makes this a bird watchers haven.
The Pacuare River forms the northern border for one of Costa Rica's most networks of national parks and protected reserves, offering some of the finest white water rafting in Latin America. The Pacuare waters flow deep inside a primordial rainforest, through a dense wilderness, and steep gorges. The rainforest provides shelter to jaguars, ocelots, sloths, and numerous wildlife species.
Gateway to many of Costa Rica's most exciting destinations, it's a spectacular way to start your Costa Rican experience, and have an intimate encounter with nature, or be pampered at one of its enchanting forest lodges. Activities include hiking the nature trails of the Los Angeles Biological Reserve and the Villablanca Cloud Forest, bird watching, and canopy tours.

Costa Rica is famous among serious bird watchers. With almost 850 species of birds packed into an area half the size of Kentucky, it's hard not to become enthused about it. One of the reasons for Costa Rica's extraordinary bird life is the country's great variety of habitats: rain forests, mangrove swamps, beaches, cloud forest, rivers, etc. Trust that the local guides will make any bird watching expedition an educational and unforgettable experience.
