Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is the stunning site of the ancient Inca city high in the Andes of Peru. Located at 8,000 feet above sea level, this UNESCO World Heritage site is often referred to as `the Lost City of the Incas.` It is one of the most familiar symbols of the Incan Empire and also one of the most famous and spectacular sets of ruins in the world as well as one of the 7 new wonders of the world. The 12 acres of terraces, gardens, staircases, temples and aqueducts sprawl along a jungle ridge above the Río Urubamba.

The lush terraces and stone staircases of Machu Picchu entice you to explore and view the Royal and Sacred Areas, including the Temple of the Sun and the Intihuatana - the most important shrine of the ancient site. Courageous hikers come early in the morning to climb Huayna Picchu, the huge mountain that overshadows Machu Picchu. Another hiking option is to follow the Inca Trail from the Caretaker`s Hut to the high pass where the Sun Gate stands.

Aguas Calientes

Aguas Calientes is the small town at the bottom of the valley and at the base of Machu Picchu, and the main connecting point to the site. Because of its magnificent setting, it is a very pleasant town to explore by foot. Unless you are seeing Machu Picchu on a day trip from Cusco or plan to stay at the sole lodge in Macchu Picchu itself, you will spend at least one night here. Tourist attractions in Aguas Calientes include Plaza Manco Capac, Hot Springs, Mercado de Artesanias, Machu Picchu train station, and the Machu Picchu bus station.
