GETTING AROUND - PERTH

Walking around the city of Perth is a dream with beautiful weather and plenty of sights to see along the Swan River. The city stretches along the flat coastal plain, centered along the Swan River and bounded by the Darling Scarp to the east and the Indian Ocean coastline in the west. There are beautiful parks and beaches to walk through and the city can be comfortably explored on foot with many pedestrian paths.

By Bicycle

Perth offers excellent bike paths and exploring the city on a bike is a great way to see the stunning sights. The city has some of the best cycling infrastructures in Australia and the Perth bicycle network features a growing metro-wide system of bicycle paths. The excellent year-round weather makes it the perfect place for cycling with paths along the Swan River and some stunning scenic sights. Bikes can be hired from many rental shops in the city and bike tours are also available. There are cycling maps available from most of the bike shops and Planners Map. Kings Park, Armadale, the Hills, and the Swan River are great scenic routes to explore.

By Taxi

Taxis are available in the city of Perth and the two major companies are Swan Taxi and Black and White Taxis. Maxi Taxi Perth is another great option for taxi services in the city. There can be extended wait times during peak hours (5 am-9 am weekdays and weekend evenings) other than that taxis are plentiful. Taxis can be found all over the city, especially outside the main train and bus stations as well as outside hotels and main attractions or ordered over the phone. Taxi fares are regulated by the state government and the flag fall rate is A$3.90 during the weekdays and increases to A$5.70 on weeknights and weekends, the rate is A$1.59 per 0.62 miles and increases by A$0.10 increments. There are surcharges on designated holidays and weekend nights from midnight to 5 am.

Ubers are becoming more popular in the city of Perth with up to 50% cheaper rates than most taxis, they can be limited in certain locations. Simply download the Uber app on your smartphone and book a taxi.

By Train

There are 70 railway stations in the city of Perth, the Perth Railway Station is the largest station on the Transperth network, serving the central business district. There are frequent train services offered in the city and depart every 15 minutes during the week and every 30 minutes after 7 pm and weekends. Trains run from 5:30 am until midnight.

There are trains run along the Indian Pacific trans-continental railway which travels from Perth to Sydney via Kalgoorlie, Adelaide, and Broken Hill, a four-day three-night journey and one of the world's greatest train journeys, traveling along the longest stretch of straight track of any railway in the world.

Perth Railway Station is the largest station on the Transperth network, serving the central business district of Perth, Western Australia. It serves as an interchange between the Armadale, Fremantle, Joondalup, Mandurah, and Midland lines as well as Transwa's Australind service. All services stop at the Perth station in the city center on their way to or from the outlying stations. The Mandurah line travels through the Elizabeth Quay station which is located adjacent to the bus station.

By Bus

There are zero-fare bus and train trips offered in the city of Perth with trips around the city center which is known as the `Free Transit Zone` and includes four high-frequency CAT bus routes. The buses are air-conditioned and come in different colors with the distinctive cat logo, buses run every 10 minutes on various routes connecting major facilities and attractions.

By Boat

Fremantle is the main container and passenger port in Perth located 12 miles southwest at the mouth of the Swan River. A ferry can be caught to travel across the Swan River, from Elizabeth Quay Jetty and connects with the Blue CAT bus, running to South Perth on the promenade at Mends Street, the ferries depart every 15-30 minutes from 6:30 am until 11:30 pm.

By Car

The city of Perth is connected by major highways and freeways and offers the opportunity to travel to outlying areas and attractions if you have your vehicle. There are miles of sprawling landscapes and beautiful countryside within minutes of leaving the city center. Traffic in Perth travels on the left-hand side of the road.
