How do I get to Salalah by air?

There are Oman Air flights from Muscat and Dubai (each about 1 to 1.5 hrs). The main airport of Salalah is the Salalah International Airport. Located just 6 miles from the city center, it is considered to be Oman’s second gateway and is a major airport of the country.

How do I get to Salalah by bus?

You can take a bus from Muscat which crosses the desert and takes between 12 to 15 hours. The distance to Muscat is about 630 miles.

Mwasalat (www.mwasalat.om) buses to Muscat (one way OR7.5, round trip OR12) cover the 630 miles in 12 hours, travelling via Nizwa. They leave from the bus station in the new souq at 7am, 10am and 7pm. You can store luggage in the adjoining ticket office free of charge. Mwasalat runs air-conditioned, nonsmoking buses with toilets and TV on all services.

How do I get around in Salalah?

There’s very little public transport in Salalah. The public transport system that is active within the city is not accessible to Salalah's main attractions outside the city like the waterfalls and other destinations.

Hiring a car in Salalah is recommended for exploring. Or, hiring a car with a driver is a great option as well. The drivers typically provide some great information and most of the drivers speak very good English. Plus, you don’t have to concentrate on driving. The roads are generally very well maintained. To enjoy some of the country’s more rugged roads, you'll need a 4WD, but beware of the soft sand on the beaches. If you drive long distances, plan your fuel stops as there are hardly any gas stations outside the city.

The main car-hire companies can be found on arrival at the airport, and Budget is represented at the Crowne Plaza Resort. Many local companies offer cars for rent, especially along 23 July St.

Can I call/hail a taxi?

Salalah’s taxis are considered the most common means of public transportation, the taxi drivers are well acquainted with all of Salalah's attractions and will get you around with ease. Is Salalah walkable city?

Walking is a great way to experience the city. Enjoy the hustle and bustle of the city life where you can walk inside Al Husn souq and pick up some souvenirs.

Explore further outside the city and take a walk down a creek, up the valleys, on the sandy beaches, or near the coastal areas and discover Dhofar’s natural wonders that you tend to miss while on a drive. One of the most interesting treks in Salalah is to follow the frankincense trail in the valleys.

Wadi Darbat, which is one of the most visited places during the Khareef, is also a great place for trekking. And if you do not mind the long hours of walks and care less about the tired legs then go up along the cliffs of Jabal Samhan range and trek for 5-6 hours. Jabal Samhan Nature Reserve is a nature reserve in Dhofar where you might spot some porcupines and gazelles if you are lucky.

History buffs will love the heritage walk at Al Baleed Archaeological Site or at ruins of Sumuharam where the tranquil Khor Rori lies. Apart from these there are several other random walking tracks on the meandering green mountains. Choose one and immerse yourself in nature.

Is Salalah a safe city?

Salalah is a very safe place. That being said, as with anywhere you travel, always keep your wits about you, maintain your personal space and do not let strangers come into close personal contact with you if possible.

It’s advisable for females to bring conservative clothing, especially if traveling outside the city. Long sleeves and pants are adequate. And when at the beach, keep a sarong handy.

Can I pay/tip in US dollars?

The currency in Oman is the Omani rial (Arabic OMR). US dollars are not accepted. ATM machines are found almost everywhere in the cities, and are commonly found at petrol stations and major shopping areas in other cities around the country. Credit cards are widely accepted.

The best time to visit Salalah is typically from June to August, which is the monsoon months and also the peak season in the region. The beautiful Salalah has a monsoon season that is not common in other cities in Oman. The monsoon season (also known as Khareef) typically starts around June and lasts until August. During monsoon, Salalah is transformed into a stunning oasis due to the light drizzles that cool the air. The Salalah Tourism Festival takes place during the monsoon season from July 15- August 31, every year. The festival welcomes the monsoon season, taking place in Ittin Rd where many Arab families come to have picnics. It is a very lively time of the year in Salalah.

However, if you’d rather not go during the rainy season, the best time to visit Salalah would be between September and February. At this time, the weather is pleasant and temperatures are normally in the mid 70’s F. This is considered the winter season and off-season for tourism. The winter months are drier and a great time to enjoy outdoor activities such as trekking or cycling in and around the city. This is also the most affordable time to spend in Salalah.

I don't speak Arabic, will many people speak English?

Arabic is the official language of Oman. Most residents speak some English, but if you know a bit of Arabic and Malayalam then conversation will be much easier. We suggest you get a good English-French guidebook (or app on your phone) and familiarize yourself with common phrases such as hello, goodbye, excuse me and numbers 1-10.

What is the food like?

Almost every restaurant in Salalah serves Halal food and Muslim travellers will be able to sample a variety of exquisite local dishes across the city.
