SAN JUAN - NEIGHBORHOODS

Condado

The Condado was once referred to as the `Riviera of the Caribbean` during its heyday in the 1920s, a lavish beachfront resort area. An upscale neighborhood connected to Puerta de Tierra and Old San Juan by a bridge built in 1910 featuring restored hotels and other luxury accommodations. Condado is situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the sparkling Condado Lagoon with many of its fancy resorts and hotels lining the beach. Avenida Ashford is the central road through Condado brimming with modern condos, Art Deco properties, and a Miami Beach vibe which comes alive at night. This is one of the glitziest neighborhoods in San Juan stretching along the beach boasting fancy restaurants such as Budatai, luxury designer shopping including Gucci and Salvatore Ferragamo, glamorous residences, and a popping nightlife. The Condado Vanderbilt resorts are set in the heart of the neighborhood boasting the only hammam spa found in the entire Caribbean, the hotel has received many awards including being recognized as one of the Best Historic Hotels.

Isla Grande

Isla Grande is also known as Santurce and San Juan`s hottest neighborhood which has rebirthed in recent years. The artistic heart of San Juan is home to many fascinating galleries and museums such as Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico and Luis A. Ferre Performing Arts Center. The neighborhood features the remodeled La Placita market square brimming with trendy bars, and fantastic restaurants with a lively atmosphere on the weekends. This is one of the best places to stay in San Juan with a great selection of hotels. A colorful neighborhood with a bohemian flare decorated by vibrant murals, fun shops, food trucks, street food, and various nightlife options.

Isle Verde

Isla Verde known as `Balneario` to the locals, is a beachside neighborhood situated to the east of Condado, a large district with a wide variety of hotels and other accommodations. Deluxe hotels line the best beaches in San Juan along with oceanfront luxurious condominiums. The long wide strip of soft white sand runs the entire length of this neighborhood allowing easy access to a plethora of beach and water activities and Isla Verde Avenue brimming with shops and eateries. Pine Grove Beach is a popular surfing and sailing destination, situated where the main beach comes to an end. The accommodations in Isla Verde offer guests everything they need all in one space, pools, activities, numerous dining options, endless entertainment and shopping. The food scene in Isla Verde can be found in the edgy area of Calle Loiza brimming with fantastic dining options and an eclectic mix of bars.

Miramar

The upscale residential neighborhood of Miramar is situated south of the Condado Lagoon, made up of the former barrio of Miraflores. Miramar features some of San Juan`s harbor where cruise ships dock, and fancy yachts anchor up in the marina. The Puerto Rico Convention Center resides in Miramar and there are many new hotels and a beautiful bayside promenade. Miramar was designated as a historical district in 2005 dating back to 1910 boasting beautiful Spanish Revival and Prairie-style architecture. The neighborhood is filled with activities such as sailing, fishing trips, kayak tours.

Ocean Park

Nestled between the beach resort areas of Condado and Isla Verde is the beautiful beachfront residential neighborhood of Ocean Park. A tranquil coastal neighborhood with quiet beaches, tree-lined streets, gated residential areas, sprawling verdant parks, and one of the prettiest and cleanest beaches in San Juan. Ocean Park boasts a charming mixture of Spanish, Malibu, and Caribbean influences seen in the architecture and the beautiful accommodations and spectacular views of the Caribbean. Barbos Park is a fun-filled location offering soccer fields, basketball courts, tennis courts, a baseball field, and walking tracks. Ocean Parks beaches are famed for windsurfing, body surfing, and kite sailing along with fantastic beachfront accommodations. Calle Loiza is the popular street for fine dining and a laid back nightlife scene.

Old San Juan

The authentic neighborhood of Old San Juan is the soul of San Juan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site home to the Spanish colonial fortresses, the Old City, and historic buildings. The neighborhood stretches for seven square city blocks across the headlands on a peninsula that splits San Juan Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. A beautiful, romantic neighborhood filled with Spanish colonial architecture, charming narrow cobblestone streets, pastel-colored houses, and shaded plazas and public squares such as Plaza de Armas in front of the San Juan City Hall. Hotels are housed in picturesque colonial buildings some dating back to the 16th century with easy access to the walled city and its many attractions. There are many striking monuments and cultural landmarks in Old San Juan, Capilla del Cristo, the statue of La Rogativa, and the stunning San Juan Cathedral. The neighborhood is filled with legendary restaurants, trendy bars, theaters, galleries, and some of the best shopping in the entire city.
