City Center

Takayama`s city center is brimming with hotels, guesthouses, inns and traditional ryokans that put visitors in the heart of the city and within close proximity to eateries and attractions. The central area of the city lies between the station and the Miyagawa River where an abundance of ryokan is located along with shops, restaurants, and bars. There are a variety of excellent accommodations found in the city that appeal to every budget, many of the places to stay in the city are housed in beautifully preserved buildings. The city is built around the beautifully preserved Sanmachi Suji district boasting the traditional streets of Old Town, which date back to the Edo Period and offer great places to stay along with quaint cafes, shops, and other eateries.

The Takayama Station and main bus station are located in the city center providing easy transportation options for visitors to connect with other sights and attractions found in and around the city. The city center is home to most of the city`s tourist attractions including museums and markets and other public facilities including public parking and hospitals. The peak season in Takayama is during Golden Week (April 29 - May 5), August, festival times in April and October and New Year`s when accommodations sell out fast and higher-priced due it being a very popular time to visit.
