HOW TO TIP IN DOMINICA

In the U.S. tipping is customary and expected for everything from lackluster to outstanding service. It is an etiquette which is ingrained in all trades, from wait staff at restaurants to our baristas, valets, cab drivers, porters, and many more trades.

Tipping in Dominica is pretty standard. More often than not a service charge will already be included in your price. This guide attempts to cover most situations that you, as a tourist, will encounter.

Currency: Can I pay in U.S. dollars, or should I use Pesos?

The currency of Dominica is the East Caribbean dollar, denoted by the symbol: "$" or "EC$" (ISO currency code: XCD), which is also used by seven other island nations in the Caribbean. The EC dollar is subdivided into 100 cents. Coins circulate in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10 and 25 cents and 1 dollar. Banknotes circulate in denominations of 10, 20, 50, and 100 dollars.

Restaurants and Bars: When should I tip? How much is customary?

Be sure to check for service charges when dining in Dominica. If one isn’t included you should tip 10%, more often than not the service will be included.

Bars: If service isn’t included you can tip your bartender 10% of the bill.

Hotel Staff: Who should I tip?

Tipping Hotel Staff in Dominica can be common. Make sure you check your hotel bill to be sure a service charge isn’t included. You should tip the bellboy $2 ECD per bag and the maid $3-5 ECD per night.

Taxi Drivers: Should I tip?

Tipping Taxi Drivers in Dominica isn’t common. If the ride was good you should round up the fare.

Final Thoughts:

Tipping isn’t necessarily common on Dominica (and is generally on a discretionary basis), but more often then not you will see a service charge already included in the price. If it’s missing aim to tip 10% to any guides as well.
