TIPPING IN ST LUCIA

In the U.S. tipping is customary and expected for everything from lackluster to outstanding service. It is an etiquette that is ingrained in all trades, from wait staff at restaurants to our baristas, valets, cab drivers, porters, and many more trades.

The questions `when?` and `how much?` that surround tipping can leave some travelers confused, as the practice varies. This guide attempts to cover most situations that you, as a tourist, will encounter.

Tipping in Saint Lucia is discretionary and should reflect the service you have received, however, tipping around 10 - 15% is recommended.

Currency: Can I pay in U.S. dollars, or should I use the Eastern Caribbean dollars?

The currency of Saint Lucia is the Eastern Caribbean dollar (EC$ or XCD), which is pegged to the US dollar. Notes are in denominations of EC$100, 50, 20, 10 and 5. Coins are in denominations of EC$2 and EC$1, and 25, 10, 5, 2 and 1 cents.

US dollars are widely accepted on the island, though you will usually be given change in EC dollars, and at a less favorable exchange rate.

Restaurants: When should I tip? How much is customary?

You will find that most restaurants in St Lucia add a 10% service charge as well as VAT(tax). If you feel you were given exceptional service, feel free to add a little bit on top of the 10%. Generally, the average tipping percentage is between 8-15%. The actual tipping percentage is determined according to the level of service.

Hotel Staff: Who should I tip?

Tipping is common in hotels. The average tipping percentage in hotels is between $2.00 to $5.00 USD. The actual tipping percentage is determined according to the level of service given at the hotel. The bell boy usually gets about $2.00 USD per luggage.

Tipping is not expected by staff in St Lucia's all inclusive resorts - so what you give would be seen as a token of gratitude to exceptional staff, not an obligation.

Taxi Drivers: Should I tip?

Tipping taxi drivers in St. Lucia is expected. You should aim to tip about 10%.

Final Thoughts:

Service is sometimes included in price, make sure to check your bill each time. Leave a tip only if you are satisfied of the service.
