Where is Kep located and what is it known for?

Kep, a tiny seaside town, is located on the coast of southern Cambodia. It is the capital of Kep province, the smallest and least populous province of Cambodia. Set half an hour away from the tourist hub of Kampot and around 3.5 hours from the capital of Phnom Penh.

The city is known for serving the best crabs in Cambodia. Everyone from locals to tourists alike, are eating crabs in the restaurants or off the fish market in Kep. It's also known for being a small local beach town where Cambodians go to relax.

How do I get into Kep?

Kep is accessible by buses and minivans. For a more comfortable ride, private taxis are available. Trains to Kampot, followed by a short tuk-tuk or taxi, is another option. The infrastructure in Cambodia is not the greatest. The highways are bumpy and dusty, and often have one-way lanes, which often create a lot of traffic. Many times, Google Maps may say the route is only 2 hours, and it will take double the amount of time in reality because of the road conditions.
B From Kampot to Kep, it is about 30 minutes since the two cities are very close to each other. You can take a tuk-tuk or taxi (40-45 minute ride), or several bus companies offer services between Kampot and Kep.

From Phnom Penh, there are buses and minivans, and the travel time is about 4 hours. A slower but potentially more enjoyable route is by train, approximately 5 hours, followed by a short tuk-tuk or taxi ride to Kep.

How do I get around in Kep?

Tuk-tuks are readily available for getting around Kep. Many people rent scooters to explore the town and its surroundings as well.

Is Kep safe to visit?

Yes, Kep is generally considered a safe place for tourists, but like any travel destination, it's wise to take precautions. Petty crime is low; however, it is still recommended to be aware of your surroundings, especially at night. The locals are very friendly and welcoming to visitors.

How Many Days Should You Spend in Kep?

Kep is a small town and can easily be explored in a day or two; however, how long you plan to visit depends on your priorities and travel style. Two to three days allow for enough time to explore the main attractions like Kep National Park, the Crab Market, and Rabbit Island. If you want a more relaxed pace or plan to explore the surrounding areas, consider extending your stay.

What is the currency? Can I pay/tip in US dollars?

The currency in Cambodia is the Riel. Besides the Riel, the US dollar is also officially accepted in Cambodia as a currency, where an almost fixed exchange rate exists.

What is the weather like? When is the best time to go?

The dry season, which spans from November to April in Cambodia, is the best time to visit Kep. This is when the temperatures are most pleasant.

Is Kep suitable for families?

Yes, Kep is a great destination for families. The beaches are relatively calm, and there are plenty of activities to do that are family-friendly.

I don`t speak Khmer. Will many people speak English?

The official language is Khmer. Most locals do not speak English; however, English is increasingly prevalent, especially among younger generations with more access to education and in tourist industries. We suggest you get a good English-Khmer guidebook or app on your phone and familiarize yourself with common phrases such as hello, goodbye, excuse me and numbers 1-10.

What is the food like?

Kep is renowned for its fresh and delicious seafood, especially crab, the signature dish, blue crab with Kampot pepper. Other local specialties include Kdam Dong (pickled crab), Trei Ngeat (Kep-Style dried salted fish), Num Trei Chaa (fried baby shrimp pancakes), and Nhoam Svay Kchou (green mango salad with dried shrimp). Many restaurants offer beautiful views of the ocean while you savor your meal. Whether you prefer a casual beachfront shack or a more upscale dining experience, you'll find plenty of options.

What is the nightlife like in Kep?

The nightlife is very relaxed and quiet. You won't find vibrant nightlife with clubs and late-night parties here. Instead, the focus is on enjoying the tranquility of the coastal town with post-dinner drinks and early evening relaxation.
