How do I get from the airport to my hotel?

The Sukhothai Airport is located in the Sawankhalok District 19 miles away from the downtown area with daily flights from Bangkok. There are buses, taxis, and rental cars available at the airport.

If you have not booked a private transfer through us then you only have two options for transportation from the airport to your hotel.

What types of transportation can I find at the airport?

There are buses available at the airport to transport passengers to their hotel in the city. There is an information desk inside the arrivals hall where tickets can be purchased and timetables are available. Buses depart from 7 am onwards and tickets cost around 30 baht.

There are taxi trucks available outside the terminals to transport passengers for around 20 baht to the city.

There are several car rental companies available with a car rental desk found inside the arrivals hall. Cars can also be hired with drivers for private transfers.

How do I get from the train station to my hotel?

The Sawankhalok Station is the nearest train station to Sukhotai located 19 miles outside of Sukhothai town. There are taxis and songthaews outside of the station for further transport into the city. There are buses available too.

How do I get from the bus station to my hotel?

The Sukhothai Old Town Bus Station is situated just outside of town with tuk-tuks waiting outside costing around 60 baht for a ride into town. The New City Bus Station is located about 2 miles from the town center with a local shuttle for transport to the city center costing about 15 baht. Songthaews are also available for about 30 baht.

How do I get around the city using public transportation?

The most common form of transport in Sukhothai are tuk-tuks and motorcycle taxis which are great for short quick journeys within the town. Tuk-tuks will transport visitors to the historical part and other attractions in the Old City, but beware of price gauging the price should cost around 300 baht for a few hours, however, they try to charge 600, which would be an ok price for the entire day!

Big blue Songthaews travel from a bus stop on Charodwithitong Road to Old Sukhothai and transports passengers to a stop just outside of the historical park for around 30 baht. There are frequent songthaews that run between New Sukhothai and the Historical Park from 6 am until 5:30 pm costing about 30 baht for 30 minutes.

Scooters and motorbikes can be rented from shops and guesthouses around town. The rates run around 60 baht for an hour or 250 baht for the day.

At the gates of the Historical Park, there are golf carts for hire or a hop on hop off tram tour.

Can I ride a bike in Sukhothai?

Riding a bike is a classic way to explore Sukhothai and Historical Park. Cycling around gives you the ability to cover more ground and see the attractions situated close by. A bicycle can be rented from many bike shops in town, guesthouses and outside the historical park. Sukhothai bicycle tours offer a guide to cycle around the park and show you hidden sights that you might not discover on your own. Being on a bicycle gives you the ability to see the natural surroundings in Sukhothai including fields and rivers which makes it a magical setting.

Is Sukhothai a walking city?

The new town of Sukhothai is built along the Yom River with pleasant walking paths along the river banks. The Historic Sukhothai is around 10 miles from the new town where all the historical temples and ruins are found. It is possible to walk around the old town on foot exploring the many restaurants, shops, and other attractions found within close range. Walking around the Sukhothai Historical Park is possible on foot, but it is very large and it would take some time to discover everything on foot.

Is Sukhothai a dangerous city, is there anything I should be aware of?

Sukhothai is not a dangerous city; there are very few incidents of violence, theft or harassment and tourist police do well maintaining the safety of the city. Travelers should still be cautious just as in any other city in the world, be aware of pickpockets in tourist areas and certain scam artists. Keep your bags and belongings close to you, especially at night.

Do not drink the tap water, stick to bottled and filtered water.

What are some popular areas for shopping?

The city of Sukhothai is known for its sangkhalok ware and gold and silver jewelry craft, all made by hand with unique colors and designs. The Hat Siao textile village is a great location to visit and pick up vibrant embroidered textiles.

There is a small market found inside Central Park near the temple of Wat Chana Songkhram, next to the King Ram Khamhaeng Monument. Stroll around the quaint market next to the water and pick up some unique items to take home, there are food and refreshments sold here too with seating by the water and great views at sunset.

The Sukhothai Night Market is the place to be on Saturday evenings where everyone gathers after sunset to buy food and souvenirs while taking in the vibrant atmosphere. There are live music and dancing along with delicious Thai street food that should not be missed.

What is the best time to visit Phitsanulok?

The best months to visit Sukhothai are from November to February when the temperatures are cooler but the daytime temperatures remain in the high 80s.

What is the currency? Can I pay/tip in US dollars?

The Thai Baht is the currency used in Sukhothai and you will need to exchange your dollars to Baht. Try to avoid major banks and popular tourist areas as you tend to get the worst exchange rates. Super Rich is the most famous money exchange company in Bangkok with several branches across the city; you must have your passport with you to exchange money in Bangkok.

Tipping is not a common practice in Thailand and is not customary. There is no requirement to tip but small gratuities for great service are appreciated, and most restaurants and hotels will include a 10% service charge on your bill.

What is the food like?

Sukhothai is known for their `kuay tiew` noodles!! The ancient recipe dates back centuries with a bone broth, sliced pork, ground peanuts, bean sprouts, vegetables, and rice noodles. The famous noodles can be found in local restaurants and at the night market, they can be enjoyed as a soup or dry. Some signature locations to try these delicious noodles are at Jayhae, a very popular restaurant just west of the Mae Nam Yom. Tapui is a very eclectic location with a tin roof, said to be the first shop in the city to have sold the signature noodles also located west of Mae Nam Yom.

Sukhothai has some great restaurants that serve up delicious local Thai cuisine. Many restaurants and street food stalls can be found along the main road that leads to the Historical Park. Also be sure to explore the markets, especially the early morning market and the night market for some delicious freshly cooked dishes.

What is the nightlife like?

The best things to do in Sukhothai on an evening enjoy a spectacular sunset, roam the night market or see the stunning temples lit up by floodlights at night. Watching the sunset at Wat Sa Si is a beautiful serene sight with the surrounding lake which makes for some great photos. The Sukhothai Night Market is a vibrant place to be at night bustling with people, music, food, and dancing. The Sukhothai Historical park puts on a light and sound show at night (Fri-Sun 7 and 8 pm). There are a few local bars scattered throughout the town but Sukhothai is not exactly a city brimming with nightlife.

I don`t speak Thai will there be many people who speak English?

The official language spoken in Thailand is Thai, however, English is widely spoken by people working in the service and tourism industries. We recommend that you get a good English-Thai guidebook and familiarize yourself with a few common phrases, such as hello, goodbye, please and thank you, excuse me and numbers 1-10.
