Historic Center

The historic center of Arequipa dates back to the 1500`s and has earned a UNESCO World Heritage stamp with some of the most beautiful buildings found here including the stunning 16th century twin-towered cathedral that dominates the main square `Plaza de Armas`. The historic streets here feature the signature volcanic white sillar rock that gives the city its nickname of `The White City`.

The historic center of the city is compact and pedestrianized which allows for walking to many attractions including the famous Plaza de Armas main square filled with umbrella-shaded cafes, al fresco restaurants, and rooftop bars. The maze of side streets and alleyways lead you to several galleries, shops, historic buildings, churches, and museums along with plenty of dining and nightlife opportunities. The historical core of Arequipa is enchanting with cobblestoned streets that stretch for a 5 block radius, lined by beautiful architecture and decoratively carved colonial buildings. This area is filled with beautiful old buildings, open courtyards and sparkling fountains.

Outskirts

Arequipa boasts 19 neighborhoods that stretch out from the historical center all the way to the mountain filled countryside all of them feature their own characteristics and charm.

Some of the popular and traditional neighborhoods to stay in include Cayma, which is just a 15-minute walk from the popular Plaza de Armas is an inner suburb in the city located in a high area boasting magnificent views of the city, often referred to as the `Balcony of Arequipa`. This charming neighborhood is filled with a mix of historic and modern accommodations and plenty of dining and shopping opportunities within walking distance.

Yanahuara is also situated within walking distance of the historic heart of Arequipa and is known for the large Colonial homes made of the signature white sillar rock decorated with vibrant bursting baskets of flowers that line the narrow streets. There is a small town square with many restaurants, cafes, and shops, it is a great place for an evening stroll. The peaceful neighborhood boasts the best views of the city and the towering El Misti volcano from the `Mirador de Yanahuara` (a lookout point). `Picanterias` is a traditional type of restaurant serving Arequipa`s spicy cuisine, with recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation.

San Lazaro is a charming suburb with narrow winding lanes and small picturesque squares with Spanish Colonial style architecture. In the countryside lies Huasacache where the sprawling La Mansion del Fundador is located, the restored home of Arequipa`s founder along with countryside cafes and restaurants selling delicious cuisines. Andeneria is a lovely town set in the middle of the beautiful landscapes surrounded by mountains where the ancient Incas built a series of steps to irrigate the mountainside fields.
