WHAT TO EXPECTReceive a pickup from your Vientiane hotel in the morning, before continuing to Vat Sisaket, the oldest monastery in the city. Wander amid the
more than 6,800 Buddha images and statues that decorate the monasterys interior as you learn about its well-preserved interior and main hall.
Next, travel to Ho Phra Keo, a one-time royal temple that today houses a Buddhist museum of art and sculpture. The complex is known for its extensive collection of Buddha sculptures, as well as for being the original home of the famous Emerald Buddha that now resides in Bangkok.
Proceed on to the next stop at That Luang, one of the most revered shrines in all of Laos. Get a sense for this 147-foot-tall (45-meter), gold-covered stupa and its unique banana-flower shape. During your stop youll also learn about the shrines history, including its role as a home for a relic from the Lord Buddha.
Continue to Anousavali, also known as the Victory Gate or Patouxai, a dramatic arch that bears a striking resemblance to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Take a break midday for lunch at a traditional restaurant before continuing to Vientianes well-known Buddha Park, first built by a local monk in the 1950s. From Vientiane a truck or tuk tuk will take you with the bikes to Ban Tanmixay Village to start cycling, passing picturesque rice fields to the left and the mountains of the Phou Khao Khouay National Protected Area on the right. Take a break upon reaching the River Time Resort at the Nam Ngum River, where we take a ferry down the river for about 30 minutes to Ban Thadindeng, a Hmong village. Explore the village before continuing on a dirt road in the midst of the rice fields.
After passing Ban Thakai, continue to Ban Tontam where you will have your deserved picnic lunch at the nice "Sala" (meeting hall) of the village surrounded by a beautiful pond and nearby Phou Khao Khouay mountain range as a picture worthy backdrop. After lunch you will cycle to Ban Thakokhai and take a ferry for crossing the Nam Ngum River. The final destination of our biking tour is the Ban Pako Resort, where we will take another boat for going up-stream to Ban Somesamai. Here your truck or tuk tuk, respectively, will be waiting for you to return to Vientiane. If time allows, you will stop at Wat Veunphan Temple opposite to Ban Somesamai for a short visit. According to local legend, when the temple was being built in 1563 a young pregnant woman named Si Muang volunteered to sacrifice herself to appease the angry spirits. She threw herself into a hole in the ground where the buildings central pillar was to be placed, and was crushed when the massive pillar was lowered into position. This central pillar also formed the centre of the town that was springing up around Wat Si Muang, which to this day is revered as the mother temple of Vientiane.

That in Laotian refers to an inverted bell shape (or unopened lotus flower) structure that usually contains relics of the Buddha.
Legend has it that a seven-headed water serpent a Naga lived here to protect the stupa that was once covered in pure gold. During the Siamese-Laotian war in the 1820s, the gold was pillaged and taken to Siam, now Thailand, leaving the legacy that is the black stupa today.
Known as the Black Stupa, many locals believe this mythological structure was once inhabited by a seven-headed dragon (now dormant) that stood to protect the city from the threat of the Siamese. We shortly cycle along the Mekong River where you can enjoy the beautiful views across the river and into neighboring Thailand. From the Ban Tong village, we continue along the canal which takes its source from the nearby Mekong River and is used to irrigate nearby rice paddy fields. As we carry on cycling despite the relative close proximity to the bustling city you will certainly feel like you are a million miles away! Enjoy the peace and serenity as you watch the local people going about their everyday tasks.2 hours -Admission Ticket Included2: Tad Moun WaterfallsCarrying onwards we head through some dirt tracks which take us through rice fields and forest, the trail can get a little muddy and sandy along the way but really takes us away from everything and will immerse us in nature. Along the way we may see the local people tending to their rice paddy fields depending on the time of the year, the trail leads us back to a tarmac road, we head along the road for a while until arriving at Tad Moon waterfall which is a popular spot for the local people from Vientiane, the waterfall itself can actually completely dry up during the dry season however it is still worth a visit to see the different rock formations, at the waterfall we take some time for a quick break and enjoy a cold drink.2 hours -Admission Ticket Included3: VientianeFrom the waterfall we cycle along the main road which is freshly paved and very smooth yet relatively quiet in terms of traffic, we shall begin with a slight ascend which from there the remainder of the cycling takes us on a steady downhill until arriving in the village of Ban Mai which sits on the banks of the Mekong, before that it is time to enjoy lunch alongside the river, you will take a lunch of delicious sandwiches, crisps and fruit all washed down with a cold drink.2 hours -Admission Ticket Free4: Mekong Riverside ParkAfter your lunch and taking some time to relax you will don your life-jackets and board your kayaks for the journey downstream back to Vientiane. Along the way you will enjoy the scenery on both sides of the river as you head along the border between Laos and Thailand, of course staying on the Lao side during the entiretyThe Mekong River is home to several river islands (Don in Lao) along the way we visit one of the largest Don Xing Xou which is used as for farming taking advantage of the year round fertility, it is also home to a beautiful beach at the far end! We carry onward kayaking down the Mekong until arriving back in Vientiane, the trip ends just outside the city center next to a riverside bar, the perfect way to end the day by enjoying an ice cool beer next to the river. It is one of the most beautiful temples in the capital, and its breezy teak covered hallways are filled with thousands of miniature Buddha statues.
Continue on to the nearby Wat Phra Keo. Used as a religious museum, Wat Phra Keo displays a collection of both Lao and Khmer works of art. Also nearby is the Presidential Palace. Although you are not allowed to visit inside, it is a good glimpse in to the towns colonial past as this building formerly served as the French governors palace. Visit COPE, an association working to help landmine victims. A visit to the center provides in-depth information about the history of the American/Vietnam war and the lasting impact of unexplored ordinances (UXO) in the area and the efforts underway to clear them.
Continue to the Patuxay monument, Laos version of the Arc de Triomphe, where you can climb the stairs to the roof for sweeping panoramic views of the city. Next, your tour takes you to That Luang, the holiest site in Laos. Constructed by King Setthethirat in the 16th century, the temple is resplendent as the sun is shines upon its towering golden spire. End your tour of the capital along the banks of the Mekong River. Stroll along the river, stop to enjoy a cold drink, or sample a snack from one of the many local food stalls.
