Male, is the tiny yet amazing capital city of the Maldives. A pulsating mini-metropolis overflowing with sights and attractions including an artificial beach and a protected ocean pool. The world`s smallest capital city offers bustling narrow streets brimming with waterfront markets like the famed Male Fish Market, magnificent mosques, a gold-tipped Islamic Center, and the National Museum. Male is a great place to begin or end your vacation to the magical Maldives, known for its distinct character, winding narrow streets, colorful architecture, and a great atmosphere
The Maldives boasts warm tropical sunshine-filled days year-round with daily average temperatures ranging between 84-88 degrees. The dry season on the islands is from November to April when there are very little precipitation and plenty of warm weather with low humidity. These months are also considered peak season when resorts are busy and prices are higher, the beaches and other attractions may also be busier this time of year, but the islands are never crowded. The rainy season, also known as Monsoon season is May through October when fast-moving afternoon thunderstorms can occur daily and the wind picks up around the islands. This is a popular time for surfers with bigger waves and swells.
We recommend 7-10 days based on what you want to see and do. We offer flexible vacation packages so you can select your number of nights in each city, desired hotel and activities. We suggest a minimum of 3 nights in larger cities.
Getting around the Maldives Islands is best done by a charter plane or by ferry or boat. All of the resorts in the Maldives are located on private islands with your accommodations providing transfers to your facilities and once there you do not need to go anywhere. Resorts offer on-site restaurants, bars, spas, and other amenities, so walking around once you are there will be your primary way of exploring. Island hopping and visiting other islands is best done via a boat ride, day trip, or other excursions. Resorts collect guests from the Male or regional airstrips via speed boat, most of the islands are completely car-free and there is a cheap public ferry system available and private speedboat transfers for independent travelers.
The official currency of the Maldives is the Maldivian rufiyaa (Rf or MVR). US Dollars are not accepted, be sure to exchange your dollars for Pula upon arrival. There are exchange desks found in the airport. ATMs can be found in the city of Male and on the bigger inhabited islands.
The official language spoken in the Maldives is Dhivehi or Divehi (also known as Maldivian), an Indo-Aryan language. English is widely spoken in the Maldives and Arabi is also spoken by a large portion of the population. Most of the inhabitants have a good comprehension of the English language. We recommend you get a good English-Maldivian guidebook and learn common phrases such as hello, goodbye, please, thank you, and numbers 1-10.
