Its heart is represented by the Kathmandu Durbar Square with palaces and temples, including the current incarnation of the Kasthamandap or `Wooden house` that gives the city its name. This is believed to be one of the oldest wooden buildings in the world - dating from around 1000 AD and it is the most popular UNESCO World Heritage Site in Nepal. The city is the starting point for numerous adventures such as trekking, rafting, jungle adventures, and more extreme sports in the rest of the country, including the breathtaking Himalaya Mountains.
