WHAT TO EXPECT

Located just a 15-minute drive from Rotorua, the Buried Village of Te Wairoa features an interactive museum, scenic walking trails and a look at the devastating effects of one of New Zealands greatest natural disasters: the Mt Tarawera volcanic eruption of 1886, which wiped out a natural landmark known as the Pink and White Terraces and killed many people.

Expect to spend at least 1.5 hours for the entire experience, including audio guides, living history tours and talks by costumed guides scheduled throughout the day. Gain firsthand insight into the chaos of the night that Mt Tarawera erupted and destroyed Te Wairoa, a village inhabited by Maori and missionaries. Children can search for clues using a special guide map of the excavated sites.

On the Waterfall Trail, learn about the geothermal features of the landscape, including Lake Tarawera, and stand in the spray of Wairere Falls as it plunges 98 feet (30 meters) to the valley below.

Youll find a range of goods at the gift shop and scones with tea or coffee at Vi's Teahouse.

Now, well over a century later, the excavated village provides a unique opportunity to see how the area's Maori inhabitants and early settlers lived.

Learn about the geological and geothermal features of Lake Tarawera, Mt. Tarawera, and the surrounding lakes region. We recommend that you arrive at least 10 mins prior to the meeting time at the Rotorua Information Centre. Once you meet your guide, you can forget about time altogether!

WHAT TO EXPECT

Your friendly guide will pick you up and shuttle you from Rotorua, past the iconic Redwood forest as you make your way to our base on the lake shorelines. Upon arrival you will gear-up and prepare for an epic night out with all activity equipment provided. Your guide will then run through safety and basic kayak instruction before you take the helm on the water. You will then begin exploring the shoreline and embracing the last light of the evening as you follow your guide around the lake edge. Once its dark, discover your adventurous side as your guide leads you inside small hidden caves home to galaxies of glow worms. Take ample time to enjoy the magical moments inside the caves before returning along your course in the dark. If it is a clear night the magic continues as the stars come out and the cloudy appearance of the milky-way fills the sky. Upon returning to the base you will feel like you have been in another world for the past few hours and will likely have made some new friends through the wonder of this shared experience.

What to bring:

For kayaking in summer (November - February) we recommend wearing light-weight clothing. Shorts/pants/leggings for your bottom half and at least two layers for your top half. Water friendly shoes are recommended, but are provided free of charge if needed.

For Kayaking outside of summer (March - October) please wear warm clothing (thermal if possible). Pants/leggings for your bottom half and a minimum of three layers for your top half (which are preferably thermal, fleece, or wool). Please also bring a warm hat and gloves. During our coolest months you will be provided a wetsuit to wear over your clothes. Water friendly shoes are recommended, but are provided free of charge if needed.

WHAT TO EXPECT

After hotel pickup in Rotorua, youre transferred to the kayaking headquarters for a safety briefing and paddle instructions provided by an experienced guide. From the launch site at nearby Lake Rotoiti, don a life jacket and climb into your kayak to paddle at a leisurely pace across the picturesque lake.

Follow your guide past holiday homes that sprinkle the lakeshore, and learn about regional history, Maori legends, and New Zealand's native flora. About halfway into your kayak excursion, arrive at natural hot springs where you can soak and swim in the pools fed by Lak Rotoiti's thermal waters.

At the hot pools, dig into a barbecue picnic that may include steak, gourmet sausages, a choice of salads and dessert.

After dinner, paddle to several caves that can only be reached by boat. Be mesmerized by the light of glowworms illuminating cavern walls, then continue to a second cave inhabited by kourasmall freshwater crayfish. Marvel at the sunset reflected on the water and, as evening turns to dusk, follow your guide back to the boat launch.

Back at the base, you can change into dry clothing before being transported back to your Rotorua hotel.

On arrival at our base you will need to sign in and then we will go through an initial briefing about gear etc. and get geared up, then we will transfer you 10 minutes to the lake.

At the lake we will go through a safety briefing before paddling for around 1 hour to the hot pools.

You will have time to relax in Hot Pools all fed from a natural spring.

Then we will paddle around 1 hour back to the start point and transfer you back to the base to change and return you to where we picked you up from if required.

Join us for a guided Kayak trip to the spectacular Manupirua Springs Hot Pools on Lake Rotoiti.
On arrival at our base we will get you kitted up in the paddling gear before a short drive to the lake.
After a paddle and safety brief we paddle across scenic Lake Rotoiti to this amazing spot only accessible by boat.
Situated right on the lake edge there are a range of hot pools of varying temperatures all fed from a natural hot spring.

Paddling time is usually around 1 hour each way, with time to relax and enjoy the hot pools or swim in the lake before enjoying a leisurely return paddle.
During the paddle your guide will tell you some of the history of the area and some local Maori legends, we also have the option of visiting a cave where you may be able to glimpse a couple of glow worms.

This is one of New Zealand's most culturally significant volcanoes. Standing on the volcano you will see a view of the spectacular craters and domes formed by the 1886 eruption.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Make your way to the lakefront helipad in Rotorua and board your helicopter for the flight to Mt. Tarawera. Your pilot takes off over the crater lakes of the Northern Lakes district before treating you to expansive aerial views over the lunar-like landscape of the volcano, which includes a 5-mile-long (8-kilometer) rift.

Soaring over Lake Tarawera, the helicopter circles the volcanic terrain, including a vast crater system formed by the 1886 eruption, which covered the village of Te Wairoa and took 153 lives. Learn about the destruction of the Pink and White Terraceswaterfall pools that drew 19th-century tourists to the shores of Lake Rotomahana.

Upon landing, disembark the chopper with your guide and explore Mt. Tarawera on foot. Walk past otherworldly craters and volcanic domes and compare the regions geologic history with Maori legend as you listen to colorful commentary.

After your exploration on the ground, re-board the helicopter for the return flight to Rotorua.

This short but very scenic floatplane tour over Mt. Tarawera will fit into even the busiest of itineraries. Meet the pilot, who serves as your aerial guide and offers narration on the awesome sights from above, beside Lake Rotorua.

Feel the thrill of a water take-off before your pilot expertly navigates the skies toward Mt. Tarawera, a mountain steeped in Maori legend. Youll follow a 5-mile (8-kilometer) volcanic rift along the summit of Mt. 1: The National Kiwi Hatchery

See conservation in action at one of the largest and most successful kiwi hatchery in the world!

The National Kiwi Hatchery is the national leader in kiwi husbandry, egg incubation systems, hatching techniques and kiwi chick rearing. When you join one of our experiences, you'll get to see kiwi eggs being incubated, the hatching process and newly hatched kiwi chicks.

Hatching season is September and March and the highest chance for you to see kiwi eggs and chicks. Outside of these months you will have chance to observe our resident adult kiwi foraging in our Nocturnal House.

Your ticket entry goes straight back to our kiwi hatching program.

The National Kiwi Hatchery is located at the Agrodome, Rotorua.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Lake Rotorua (Pass by)

Our Nocturnal Glow-worm tour takes 2.5 to 3 hours and includes a 2 kilometer walk.

We will depart from Rotorua in a minivan, small group (8 people). Depart times vary depending on season.

Once there after a walk through the darkness of native bush you will be guided by the sound of running water. Soon towering banks will rise up around you. Then in this moment turn off your flashlight and you will not be disappointed. Literally thousands of glow worms lite up like night sky, forming their own constellations all around you.
At any time of the year it is unlikely that the glow worms will be the only wildlife that you encounter. Wallabies and Possums patrol the area and their rustling, along with the eerie call of the morepork, will provide the sound effects for you night walk.

Out of the forest the 'star' gazing is at is best on a clear dark night sky.

Come along, soak up the atmosphere and learn about New Zealand's incredible night life.
