WHAT TO EXPECT

Your tour begins with morning pickup in Te Anau and a scenic drive to Milford Sound.

Take a short stroll along a boardwalk at Mirror Lakes to see beech forest and wetland pools. The 45th South Parallel marks the halfway point between the equator and the South Pole.

Stop next at Cascade Creek, then the Hollyford Lookout, which overlooks the Hollyford Valley and Darren Mountains. Have the option to do the walk to Marian Cascade, which tumbles from Lake Marian.

Get photo ops at Falls Creek and Monkey Creek, and if time allows, a quick walk leads to a point with views of the Gertrude Valley. Look for kea sightings at the east portal of the 4,166 foot (1,270 meter) long Homer Tunnel and pass through the scenic Cleddau Valley. During the last part of the journey to Milford Sound, take a short walk to The Chasm, rock formations that make up a 72-foot (22-meter) deep and narrow ravine cut by the Cleddau River.

Your Doubtful Sound cruise begins with a pickup from a central location in Te Anau and a coach journey to Lake Manapouri. After a short boat ride over the lakes vivid waters, board another bus and cross Wilmot Pass, stopping to view Fiordland's dense rainforest and alpine moss gardens, with a glimpse of Doubtful Sound in the distance.

Continue to Deep Cove, where you board a spacious catamaran for your boat tour of Doubtful Sound, part of Fiordland National Park and 10 times larger than the more frequently visited Milford Sound. WHAT TO EXPECT

Departing from Te Anau, travel in a small group (maximum 15 people) along the scenic Milford Road through the heart of Fiordland National Park. Your local driver/guide will share their knowledge and entertaining stories along the may.

On reaching Milford Sound enjoy a 2-hour small boat cruise to the Tasman Sea. With excellent viewing opportunities and plenty of time to enjoy the waterfalls, rainforest, mountains and wildlife.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Your trip departs from Te Anau and takes around 1.5 - 2 hours travelling in a vehicle, with short scenic stops, to arrive at Fiordlands mountain "divide" - between east and west. Here the walk begins at the Divide Shelter with a steady climb on a well maintained track. Gaining an elevation of 400 meters, the ascent takes approximately 2 hours at a leisurely pace. On a fine day lunch is had on Key Summit, and in unfavorable conditions in a nearby shelter. After lunch you will descend back to the Divide Shelter before returning to Te Anau. You will spend approximately 5 hours walking based on your ability but you should be prepared for at least 4 hours walking at a leisurely pace with some hill climbing. This walk is rated 'moderate' as some fitness is required for the hill climb and potential for challenging weather conditions on occasion.

Track is well maintained, however can be uneven and rocky in places, this is not suitable for those who have difficulty walking or are unstable.

1: Eglinton Valley

Leaving Te Anau and entering Fiordland National Park, we stop in Eglinton Valley. One of the first major attractions as you enter the park, it has views worthy of Lord of the Ring. This valley follows the path of an ancient glacier through Fiordland and really sets the scene for a journey that only gets more impressive the deeper you get.

2: Mirror Lakes Walk

Our next stop on this epic adventure is Mirror Lakes. Take a short stroll to see the famous reflections of the Earl Mountains. Get the right day, take a good picture and no one will be able to tell which way is the right way up for the photo.

3: Lake Gunn

Continuing along the Milford Road we come across Lake Gunn, named after George Gunn a famous explorer and popular for fishing. We will often stop at Lake Gunn for some photos and to enjoy the peace.

Hollyford River / Whakatipu K Tuka (Pass by)

A short drive away we start passing the Hollyford River, a gorgeous and powerful river full of large boulders and rapids. Feeding into the river at Falls Creek is the first of our extremely impressive waterfalls of the area, one of many to come.

4: Darran Mountains

Climbing in altitude we go deeper into the Darran Mountains and these views require another stop to admire and take photos. We are also entering the area where Kea (the worlds largest alpine parrot) likes to live. Start keeping an eye out for these large, cheeky and colourful birds that never fail to thrill and entertain when found.

Homer Tunnel (Pass by)

To make our way back down towards the sea we enter the mind-blowing, hand-built Homer Tunnel, hearing the incredible history and stories. Emerging from the tunnel, the valley descends sharply towards Milford Sound and on a rainy-day hundreds of waterfalls can be seen cascading down the mountain side.

5: Milford Sound

We arrive at Milford Sound and here you have a tough choice between hiking on the Famous Milford Track (one of New Zealands great walks) from Sandfly Point to Giant Gate Falls with Fiordland Outdoors or a 1.5-2 hours kayaking experience in Milford Sound with Roscos Kayaks. Both experiences are truly amazing and allow you to get up close and personal with the flora and fauna of Milford Sound. After one experience of a lifetime, we jump straight onto another when you board your cruise with Cruise Milford (TripAdvisors No. 1 rated cruise operator in Milford Sound). Homer Tunnel (Pass by)

At an altitude of 945 metres above sea level and 1.2 kilometres in length, the unlined road tunnel allows access through sheer rock to Milford Sound with a gradient of 1 in 10. Completed in 1953, traffic lights control the traffic flow through the tunnel. An incredible part of your journey along the Milford Road.

Cleddau River (Pass by)

The Cleddau River is a beautiful river of New Zealand. It flows into the head of Milford Sound. You'll see many parts of this river as you journey along the Milford Sound road.

6: Milford Sound

Milford Sound is a fiord in the southwest of New Zealands South Island. Its known for towering Mitre Peak, plus rainforests and waterfalls like Stirling and Bowen falls, which plummet down its sheer sides. The fiord is home to fur seal colonies, penguins and dolphins. Milford Discovery Centre and Underwater Observatory offers views of rare black coral and other marine life. Boat tours are a popular way to explore.

Mitre Peak (Pass by)

Mitre Peak is a beautifully dramatic mountain in the South Island of New Zealand, located on the shore of Milford Sound. It is one of the most photographed mountain peaks in the entire country.

Bowen Falls (Pass by)

The stunning Lady Bowen Falls is Milfords highest waterfall. It plunges 162m from a hanging valley into the head of Milford Sound and provides electricity for the Milford Sound township by feeding a small hydroelectric scheme, as well as being the water source for the settlement.

Sinbad Gully (Pass by)

Nestled behind the world famous Mitre Peak, the Sinbad Gully is characterised by extremely steep glacially carved walls punctuated by near vertical granite cliffs. These walls slowed pest invasion into the gully and as a result a number of unique native species remain in the Sinbad.

Southern Discoveries is passionate about preserving Milford Sounds beauty for future generations which is why its a key partner in a major conservation project the Sinbad Sanctuary Project.

The aim is to see the valley of New Zealands most photographed mountain (Sinbad Gully is at the base of Mitre Peak) become a sanctuary for native species.

Stirling Falls (Pass by)

Milfords second-highest waterfall is the Stirling Falls, a staggering 151m in height three times the height of Niagara Falls, but the 1,300m mountain behind displaces this incredible height. This is the famous waterfall that Hugh Jackman jumped off in the movie Wolverine. The sheer drop of the Stirling Falls allows boats to get right underneath its an incredible feeling to have the power of 151m worth of glacial water falling so close to you.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Board your panoramic coach after a hotel pickup in Te Anau, referred to as the Gateway to Fiordland.

En route to the fjord, your driver-guide motors past the ancient beech forest of the Eglington Valley, pausing at the Mirror Lakes for a leg stretch and photo op. Continuing on through the Upper Hollyford Valley, youll be mesmerized by Christie Falls before entering the Homer Tunnel, drilled through the solid mountain rock.

Brace yourself for the grandeur of the Cleddau Valley, where youll follow a footbridge over the Cleddau River to the Chasm to view the rivers turbulent whirlpools, before descending to Milford Sound.

From your cruise boat, indulge in the splendor of your surroundings as you glide past waterfalls that splash down vertical, glacier-carved rock walls. Hear commentary about natural wonders such as the postcard-perfect Mitre Peak, which rises 5,551 feet (1,692 meters) from the water. 1: Lake Te Anau

o Te Anau is known as the Walking Capital of the World. The mountains to the left are the Kepler Mountains, home of the Kepler Track, one of the popular walking tracks in the area. Te Anau is the gateway to Milford Sound and the Fiordland National Park. The town has a permanent population of approximately 2,500 people but this fluctuates greatly in summer when the town gets an influx of fishermen, hunters, outdoor pursuit seekers and holiday makers. Its a popular holiday destination. We stop here for morning & afternoon breaks and comfort stops.

2: Mirror Lakes Walk

o Mirror Lakes where most of the time the nearby mountains are reflected in the lakes. Being small, the lakes have less chance of being roughened by the winds compared to their larger counterparts and the large quantity of tannins leached from the soil into the waters give these lakes a much clearer mirror effect than many of the other lakes in the region. It is here you have the opportunity to walk along a boardwalk listening for Bellbirds and Tuis which are protected native birds, whilst watching Black Scaups dive for food on the bottom of the lake between the various species of beech trees. These forests are said to be 135 million years old. We will drop you off at one end of the walkway and you can re-join the coach in 10 minutes at the far end of the board walk if you wish to go for a walk.

Homer Tunnel (Pass by)

o As we head up towards the Homer Tunnel, on the right hand side you can see the remains of a camp including the oven in which the meals and bread were cooked. The shed to the left was designed to house the snow plough and was built in 1983. After its construction it was found that the doorway had not been made wide enough and the plough was not able to be housed there. It is now kept at the camp at Knobs Flat. The building today is known as the Chapel as it is one of the few areas of this region that has never been affected by avalanche.

3: Monkey Creek

o Monkey Creek is named after one of three Government employees entrusted yearly to camp here and find a path through the mountains. Eventually his monkey like climbing skills allowed him to find a path, which though not particularly safe, was used for many years for guided walking tours. It is here we have the opportunity to drink the water or full your water bottles. Because this water is flowing directly from the mountains it is one of the few remaining places it is safe to taste fresh water without contamination and you realise without chemicals doesnt really have a taste but is extremely refreshing. Be careful filling your water bottles because the water is very cold. Also dont be surprised if a Kea or two drop in to say hello!

It is a 15min Drive from Eglinton Valley and we include a 5min toilet stop at Knobs Flat before arriving at Lake Gunn. 5: Lake Marian Track

A 15min drive from Lake Gunn, this is an optional nature walk of 25-minutes. From the carpark, we cross the roaring Hollyford River and walk up the track 10-minutes to the Marian Falls. You will enjoy stunning cascading falls & chasms.

6: Monkey Creek

Monkey Creek is a 10min drive from Marian Falls carpark and is a common area to meet the Kea, a mountain parrot only found in the South Island of New Zealand. This is an opportunity to take a close up photo of these cheeky birds.

7: Milford Sound

We have a 30min drive to Milford Sound, but stop for another 20mins at The Chasm on the way. Our destination for the tour is the beautiful Milford Sound, a UNESCO World Heritage site. We spend 2.5 hours in Milford Sound, mostly aboard your nature cruise where you will experience the entire fjord, wildlife encounters, waterfalls and all the scenic beauty there is to see.

Bowen Falls (Pass by)

The stunning Lady Bowen Falls is Milfords highest waterfall. It plunges 162m from a hanging valley into the head of Milford Sound and provides electricity for the Milford Sound township by feeding a small hydroelectric scheme, as well as being the water source for the settlement.

Sinbad Gully (Pass by)

Nestled behind the world famous Mitre Peak, the Sinbad Gully is characterised by extremely steep glacially carved walls punctuated by near vertical granite cliffs. These walls slowed pest invasion into the gully and as a result a number of unique native species remain in the Sinbad.

Southern Discoveries is passionate about preserving Milford Sounds beauty for future generations which is why its a key partner in a major conservation project the Sinbad Sanctuary Project.

The aim is to see the valley of New Zealands most photographed mountain (Sinbad Gully is at the base of Mitre Peak) become a sanctuary for native species.

Stirling Falls (Pass by)

Milfords second-highest waterfall is the Stirling Falls, a staggering 151m in height three times the height of Niagara Falls, but the 1,300m mountain behind displaces this incredible height. This is the famous waterfall that Hugh Jackman jumped off in the movie Wolverine. The sheer drop of the Stirling Falls allows boats to get right underneath its an incredible feeling to have the power of 151m worth of glacial water falling so close to you.

Mitre Peak (Pass by)

Mitre Peak is a beautifully dramatic mountain in the South Island of New Zealand, located on the shore of Milford Sound. It is one of the most photographed mountain peaks in the entire country.

WHAT TO EXPECT

1: Fiordland National Park

Youll arrive at the historic wharf on the edge of Lake Te Anau where you`ll be met by your crew who will give you a safety briefing, and an order of events for your cruise. The crew will cast off and give you time to explore the ship. Youll be offered tea and coffee once under way, and either have a chance to chat with crew, or enjoy time to yourself.
Youll have some amazing photo opportunities at all times, especially as you enter the South Fiord of Lake Te Anau. Youll dock on the Hidden Lakes wharf and have your nature guide take you for a 15-minute walk into the first of the Hidden Lakes. This is another wonderful place for photos. Its an easy walk with no hills on the track. It`s a leafy trail, so youll want to have comfortable footwear.

2: Fiordland National Park

Upon return to the Faith youll have your afternoon tea and refreshments served, and time to relax and listen to the sounds of nature with the engine turned off.

As you cruise out of the South Fiord your crew will raise the sails if the wind allows, and cruise back to Te Anau with the special feeling of big sails billowing above you. Upon return youll be accompanied back down the wharf to shore by your crew. At all times our intent is to be relaxed and allow you the flexibility of choosing to focus on the chapters of the experience which give you the most pleasure

WHAT TO EXPECT

Your helicopter tour starts with hotel pickup in Te Anau and a transfer to the launch pad at the local airport. Once youre strapped in, snap on your headset to hear the pilots narration clearly and take off.

The 20-minute scenic flight encompasses spectacular aerial views over Fiordland National Park. Soar above the snow-capped peaks of Lake Manapouri, considered one of the South Islands most gorgeous landscapes. WHAT TO EXPECT

Meet your informative guide at the tour office to begin your 2 hour and 15 minute tour of the Te Anau Glowworm Caves. Start with a scenic cruise across Lake Te Anau before continuing underground to the cave system, located on the lakes western shore.

Upon arrival at the Cavern House, listen to an interesting talk about the life cycle of the glow worm as well as the history of the caves. Your guide leads you on an exploration of the caves by footpath and small punt along the rushing underground river.

Observe water-sculpted rock formations and drift into the glow worm grotto to marvel at the mysterious sight of thousands of tiny glow worms. Learn what feats of nature create the incandescence in the silent darkness.

Afterward, youre returned by boat across the lake to Te Anau.
