How do I get in to Bocas del Toro?You can fly from Panama City (Albrook Airport) to Bocas del Toro (BOC) in about an hour. Alternatively, you can take a bus to Almirante and then a water taxi to Isla Colon.
How do I get around the Bocas?
If you're staying in Bocas Town, you can easily walk or cycle everywhere you go. Cycling is the most common mode of transport in Bocas.
Water Taxis connect all the ports and islands together, so you can travel between islands. A short water taxi ride starts around $1. Bocas Town to Bastimentos is about $3. Bocas to Almirante costs around $6.
Taxis in Bocas are the traditional yellow color. Most rides around Bocas Town cost under $1.
The main islands include: Isla Colón is the main island with Bocas Town and many amenities. Isla Bastimentos is known for Red Frog Beach and jungle trails. Isla Zapatilla is uninhabited islands with pristine beaches, and Isla Carenero is a great island for surfing and beach bars.
What is the weather like Bocas? When should I go?Bocas has a tropical climate with less predictable seasons, but September - October and February - April tend to have the best weather with less rain.
Can I pay/tip in US dollars?The currency of Panama is the Panama Balboa. Panama accepts the US dollars as its main form of currency in addition to the Panamanian balboa (PAB).
I do not speak Spanish. Will many people speak English in Bocas?Spanish is the official language of Panama. Many people in Bocas speak English, especially in the hospitality industry. Because the area is popular with international visitors and has a strong Afro-Caribbean heritage, English is widely understood in Bocas Town, on Isla Colon, and in places like Isla Carenero and Isla Bastimentos. We suggest you get an English-Spanish translation book or app on your phone.
Is Boca del Toro family-friendly?Yes, families can enjoy calm beaches, nature tours, wildlife spotting and cultural experiences.
Do I need a visa to visit Panama?No, a visa is not required for entry into Panama. U.S. citizens need a valid passport to enter Panama. U.S. citizens with expired or damaged passports may not be allowed to enter and could be sent back to the United States at their own expense. What area should I stay?Isla Colon offers convenience and nightlife and Isla Bastimentos is more relaxed and nature-focused.
Can I drink the water in Panama?No, the water is not drinkable in Panama, and we don't recommend drinking the tap water in Bocas del Toro, particularly on Isla Colon and the small surrounding islands. We suggest that you carry bottled water with you. Most tourist areas will have bottled water available for purchase.
What should I do in an emergency or if I need medical attention?
911 is the emergency number for police, medical, and fire.

A modern public hospital is also available on Isla Colón, primarily for routine and urgent but non-critical care.
