Day 1 in Broome

Welcome to Broome! Upon arrival at the airport, you will go through customs and immigration. Should you opt to purchase a transfer to your hotel; a representative will be waiting for you as you exit immigration. Arrive at your hotel, check-in and do not give in to jet lag! There is so much for you to see and do!

We recommend you get acquainted with the area and take a leisurely walk along the beachfront esplanade which is lined with alfresco dining options with beach and water views. Sit back, relax, and adjust slip into `Broome Time` while enjoying some delicious food and a tropical cocktail with striking views of the cobalt Indian Ocean and red-hued coastal cliffs. Wander along the waterfront after some lunch and stop into the quaint local shops to pick up some souvenirs.

If you fancy an energetic walk along the stunning strip of coastline, embark on the Jetty to Jetty Walk, which begins and ends at the Jetty`s in Chinatown and Roebuck Bay. The trail is marked by distinctive red signs and offers lots of historical and cultural information on the points of interest you pass by.

Roebuck Bay is the location where snubfin dolphins can be spotted, these rare types of dolphins with rounded noses and fins and Broome has the largest population of these dolphins on earth. The famous `Staircase to the Moon` a stunning natural phenomenon where the receding tide and rising moon combine to create a vision that resembles steps ascending into the dusk sky. The area is also of great importance for millions of migrating shorebirds who arrive here seasonally from their breeding grounds in northern Asia.

Explore the fascinating pearling history of Broome the Broome Historical Museum near Broome Town Beach displaying different exhibits on the history of the town. The museum was established in 1910 and is housed in a building with architectural styles dating back to the 1900s. The exhibits are spread throughout different rooms, each with their own story and several significant events and factors in Broome`s history such as the bombing of Broome during WWII.

Make your way over to the popular Chinatown Neighborhood in Broome, a bustling hub boasting a lot of the beachside town history. Chinatown is the center of the luxurious pearl industry in Broome also known as `Pearl Town`, once the pearling capital of the world. Explore the fascinating streets filled with luxury pearl shops selling the local real deal. Wander around on foot and check out the independent shops, markets, arcades, and eateries.

Broome is home to the largest, finest quality, round pearl in the world harvested by Cygnet Bay Pearls, it is on display in Broome. The massive pearl measures 22.24 millimeters and an offer of $1 million for the gigantic gem!

Head down to Cable Beach, the stunning 14 mile stretch of soft golden sands and the main attraction in Broome. This is the best place to capture a wonderful sunset, find a spot on the endless stretch of sand or take a romantic stroll or take a sunset camel ride along the sweeping shores while witnessing a breathtaking vibrant sunset.

For dinner check out the abundance of eateries, many offering alfresco dining along the beachfront and the esplanade in Broome. There are many restaurants offering open deck seating, wide verandahs, or shade beneath tropical palms along the Broome waterfront. Enjoy a delicious dinner before heading back to your hotel for a restful night's sleep.

Day 2 in Broome

Begin your day with a morning walk along the soft sands of Cable Beach. Then head for some breakfast along the esplanade and soak up the morning sunshine and ocean air. If you are in town on a Saturday, be sure to check out the Broome weekend markets with local vendors selling fresh produce, local arts and crafts, and other gastronomic delights. Do some people watching and scan the colorful markets for some take-home souvenirs and delicious eats.

Spend a day at the beautiful iconic Cable Beach if sunbathing, relaxing, reading a book and swimming are your idea of relaxation, then the 14 mile stretch of sand here is the place for you.

Alternatively, head out on one of the many exciting adventures offered in Broome and the spectacular surrounding region.

Get out on the water and cruise Kimberley`s iconic red cliffs where cascading waterfalls are. There are many luxury cruise boats that offer tours of the scenic coastline where you pass by thousands of islands, ochre cliffs, and secluded beaches. See breathtaking rock art, giant boab trees, and learn about the region's fascinating geology.

The Dampier Peninsula is 124 miles north of Broome, set in the woodlands with a red cliff-lined coastline and some beautiful deserted beaches. Cape Leveque lies at the northernmost part of the peninsula boasting a unique history, culture, and lifestyle of local indigenous people. Visitors can explore the local Bardi and Nyul Nyul people's traditions, go fishing, mud crabbing, and learn hunting techniques. The Dampier Peninsula can be accessed via Cape Leveque Road and bush food, snorkeling, swimming, and relaxing are great things to experience in the area.

The Horizontal Waterfall is located in the Buccaneer Archipelago in the waters of Talbot Bay, a fast-moving tidal current rushes through two narrow gorges of the McLarty Range, pushing the water into rapid like formations that rush through twin gaps producing the two falls. A natural phenomenon that David Attenborough described as one of the greatest wonders of the natural world. The falls reverse each time the tide changes creating the vast tidal whirlpools. The falls are estimated to be 1.8 billion years old attracting thousands of visitors each year. There are options to ride on charter boats, fly on seaplanes, and other private vessels to witness the stunning falls.

Visit Willie Creek Pearl Farm located in Broome, the pearling capital of the world with a long-running pearl industry that continues to thrive today. The pristine coastal waters of Northern Western Australia are the place that produces some of the largest and finest quality pearls in the world. The pearls found here range in size from 9-20 millimeters. Take a tour of the pearl farm and learn how the farms culture highly acclaimed South Sea Pearls. Willie Creek and Cygnet Bay Pearl Farms are both popular for tours and demonstrate the entire process from the initial oyster seeding to harvesting and grading.

Also, check out Gantheaume Point is situated at the southern end of Cable Beach in Broome. Visitors can discover dinosaur footprints estimated to be 130 million years old in the rocks here at low tide. Considered to be one of the world`s best paleontological sites, there are plaster casts of the original prints embedded into the rocks at the top of the cliff for those who visit during high tide. This is a great place to see dolphins and migrating whales and visit the Gantheaume Point Lighthouse boasting breathtaking views over the Indian Ocean. The red cliffs here stand out against the piercingly blue sea, making for great photo opportunities.

Once back in town visit Chinatown for an evening of dining, and shopping in the bustling vibrant neighborhood and then check out some of Broome`s exciting nightlife along the shores.

Additional Days in Airlie Beach

If you are able to spend additional days in Broome from March through October be sure to see the Staircase to the Moon phenomenon at Roebuck Bay. This natural sight resembles gleaming stairs rising into the night sky and can be seen from several vantage points, the Mangrove Hotel is a great location with cold drinks and dinner and relaxing on the hotel`s lush verdant lawn under fairy lights makes for quite the experience.

From June through September go humpback whale watching in the turquoise waters of Broome`s coast. Take an unforgettable whale watching sunset cruise and watch these gentle giants of the sea migrate from the frigid waters of Antarctica to the warm waters off Broome to mate, give birth, and nurse their young.
