CLASSES OF SERVICE
Amenities and services vary from one train to another, so make sure to review the detailed description when booking.
Economy Class:Don't be put off by the words 'economy' or 'second class.' You won't have to stand, ride along with a rooster or be hounded by gypsies.
Similar to a coach ticket on an airline you'll get excellent value, a comfortable seat, spectacular views and a smooth ride. Accommodations can vary, from compartments with 6 seats (up to 8 seats in some Eastern European countries) to 'airplane-style' open space seating with 2 side-by-side seats on either side of an aisle. Seats are usually cloth, but may also be plastic covered in certain older cars or countries. There will be plenty of rack space to store your luggage, both overhead and at the end of the car. And of course, there are bathrooms available. The cars are heated in winter and air conditioned in summer. Furthermore, refreshment is available from a dedicated bar car or trolley service with drinks and snacks. On overnight trains, Economy fares generally include reclining seats or a six-bed shared couchette compartment. When possible, Economy fares also include a reserved seat on board. If your train operates under a 'Non-Reservable' policy, you can sit wherever you wish in Economy class.
Comfort Class:Comfort Class is train speak for first class. This enhanced travel experience is possible because there are fewer seats (and therefore, fewer travelers) in the Comfort cabin. This makes for a quieter, more spacious ride that includes wider seats and more legroom than Economy Class. And typically, Comfort Class is not significantly more expensive than Economy making it an even greater value.
Your accommodations can be in compartments for 5 or 6 people or in 'airplane-style' open space seating, 3-across separated by an aisle. These restful, cushioned seats are usually covered in comfortable fabric or leather. Most have reading lights, and many of them offer country specific outlets that can be used with adapters. If traveling overnight, these fares usually provide a one, two or four-bed sleeping compartment.
Each train may offer additional services and amenities to travelers with a Comfort Class ticket. For a detailed description of the services and amenities on specific trains please visit our train pages.
The crème de la crème awaits you in Premier Class. Available only on trains offering the highest level of comfort and the best quality of service, these seats are for discerning travelers looking to enjoy a high-end travel experience. Benefits start with a complimentary meal served at your seat or in a dedicated buffet car, but extend well beyond to luxurious accommodations and station amenities.
The range of services across all train companies is vast and varied - from free magazines and drinks to concierge services. You'll often find exclusive perks start before you even board the train, like access to first class lounges and priority check-in.
