GETTING AROUND - CULEBRA ISLAND

Renting a car to explore Culebra Island is a good idea, but not a necessity. It all depends on where you are staying and what your agenda is while visiting. Several businesses will rent cars, golf carts, and scooters on the island for around $60 per day for a jeep or $35 for golf carts and scooters. You can cover all the beaches on the island in around 1-2 days by car.

There are several rental car companies at the airport and on the island. Renting a car for a day or the remainder of your stay is a great idea to explore the stunning island. Renting a jeep can be a fun way to travel around, it is also a very popular form of transportation on the island so be sure to book ahead of time.

By Ferry

There are water taxis offered that provide round trip services to the nearby cays around Culebra such as Isla Culebrita, Cayo Norte, and Cayo Luis Pena. Trips cost anywhere between $35-$50 per person depending upon your destination. Daily ferry services are available to connect passengers to Fajardo, and Vieques. During the high seasons, ferries become extremely crowded and passengers start lining up as early as 4 AM for tickets.

By Foot

Walking around Culebra Island is made easy with many accommodations, beaches, restaurants, and bars found around the main town of Dewey. Dewey is a quaint, compact little town on the island perfect for a stroll around the local shops and visiting restaurants and bars found along the main street. Walking along the many beautiful beaches here is a wonderful experience, especially at Flamenco Beach, the most famous beach on the island and one of the best in the world.

By Bicycle

Renting bicycles on Culebra island is a great experience to see the stunning surroundings. There are many hills and dirt trails that can be explored on a bike which is a great form of exercise and a way to explore some of the hidden treasures. There are several bicycle rental options available with rates around $20 per day.

By Taxi

The main taxi companies available on Culebra Island are Raul Transportation, Willy`s Transportation, and Xavier Transportation Services. The taxi fares run between $5-$20 depending on your destination. Taxis can be ordered over the phone, found outside the airport, and ferry docks and publicos (shared taxis) can be flagged down on the street.

By Publicos/Golf Cart/Scooters

Publicos offer one route on the island running from the ferry terminal to Playa Flamenco costing around $3 per person. You can flag them down from anywhere along the route and hop on if there is room.

Golf carts and scooter rentals are also available on the island providing a fun, scenic form of travel. Carlos Jeep Rental and Jerry`s Jeep Rental rent golf carts for around $45 a day, Jerry`s rents scooters too.
