The city became a center of Swiss history and legend, and is the setting for the most memorable part of the legend of William Tell who shot an apple off of his son's head. Lugano
This fashionable city with 40,000 inhabitants rests in the Swiss canton of Ticino. Taken from Milan by the Swiss in 1512, it was ruled as a subject district until the dissolution of the old Swiss Confederation in 1798.
