The Danube River is one of the world`s famous, most scenic, and most important rivers. It flows through ten countries, more than any other river in the world. 1,501 miles of it is navigable, making it the second-longest river in Europe. The Brigach and Breg rivers join to form the Danube at Donaueschingen, in the German state of Baden-Württemberg. It flows through cities such as Regensburg before the next portion of the river begins in the Bavarian town of Passau. This portion flows through the Austrian cities of Linz and Vienna. The middle portion of the Danube begins around the Austria/Slovakia border, and it flows through the Slovak capital, Bratislava, as well as the Hungarian cities of Gyor and Budapest. The final portion of the Danube flows into Serbia, past the capital, Belgrade, and then through the Iron Gate gorge to Romania, eventually emptying into the Black Sea fifty miles east of the Danube`s largest port, Galati, in the east of the country. Whether you want to see the Danube via train, on your own terms with a self-drive, or as a passenger on one of the popular cruise boats, you are guaranteed an experience you will never forget.
