Pienza makes a great central base if you`re planning on exploring the Val d`Orcia for a few days. Just a few miles to the west you have Montalcino and San Quirico d`Orcia, while to the east you have Montepulciano. The central Piazza Pio II is framed by 15th-century buildings like the Pienza Cathedral and Piccolomini Palace. Flemish tapestries and the pope`s embroidered cape are on display at the Diocesan Museum. West is the Pieve di Corsignano, a Romanesque church with a circular bell tower just at a 10 minute walk. Pienza is also the city of cacio, which means cheese.
