Please note that approximately 40% of the route of this tour takes place in the city. We ride carefully chosen city streets, but some traffic is unavoidable to connect the Ancient Appian Way Park to the Aqueducts Park. In the remaining 60% of the route (riding in the parks) we encounter no traffic.

You will cover an area of approximately 17 miles (27km), 60% of which takes place off-road. The difficulty level of this tour is intermediate (difficult with a child seat or child extension mounted on the bicycle).

Infants under 1 year are not allowed to participate for safety reasons.

1: Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli

An interesting visit to St. Francis Basilica with his early Renaissance master-pieces by Giotto and Cimabue and the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli. Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels ,

After the death of Saint Francis in 1226, the friars built several small huts around the Porziuncola. In 1230, a refectory and some adjacent buildings were added. In the course of time, little porticoes and accommodations for the friars were added around the Porziuncola. Some foundations of these were discovered during excavations under the floor of the present basilica between 1967 and 1969.

As vast numbers of pilgrims came flocking to Assisi to receive the "Pardon of Assisi" the small space of the Porziuncola became completely inadequate to house all these pilgrims. The necessity grew to build a church incorporating the Porziuncola. The buildings around the shrine were taken down by order of Pope Pius V (1566-1572), except the Chapel of the Transito, the cell in which St. Francis had died. Construction of the basilica started on 25 March 1569.

Start your "Rome in day" tour at the city's most famous ancient monumentthe Colosseum. Walk through the interior and try to imagine the gladiator battles that took place there. Visit the nearby Roman Forum to see the Temple of Saturn, House of the Vestal Virgins, and the Arch of Titus, among other things. Go from ancient Roman monuments to more modern ones with a stop at the Vittoriano on Piazza Venezia.

Throw a coin into the water when you reach the Trevi Fountain to ensure your return to Rome. Stop for lunch (own expense) at one of the restaurants in the area before heading on to the Government District. See the Palace of the Council of Ministers, Parliament, and the Column of Marcus Aurelius.

See the Temple of Hadrian on your way to the Pantheon, where you'll see tombs of Italian kings as well as the artist Raphael. Continue on to the Ancient Baths of Nero and then to Piazza Navona to see Bernini's famous fountain at its center.

Pauline Bonaparte as Venus Victrix (or Venus Victorious) is a semi-nude life-size neo-Classical portrait sculpture by the Italian sculptor Antonio Canova. It was commissioned by Pauline Bonapartes husband Camillo Borghese and executed in Rome from 1805 to 1808 after she married the representative of the Borghese family. Then, the sculpture moved to Camillos house in Turin, then to Genoa, only arriving in the Galleria Borghese around 1838.

Two Busts of Cardinal Scipione Borghese are marble portrait sculptures created by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in 1632. Both versions of the portrait are located in the Borghese Gallery in Rome.

Truth Unveiled by Time is a marble sculpture by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. It was executed between 1646 and 1652. The artist wanted to show Truth allegorically, as a naked young lady being unveiled by a Time figure above her. However, a figure of Time was never executed. Bernini managed to express his idea by adding the figure in 1665.

David is a life-size marble sculpture by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Cardinal Scipione Borghese commissioned it to decorate the Borghese Gallery. The masterpiece was completed in seven months, from 1623 to 1624. The main subject of the sculpture is the biblical David, about to throw the stone that will bring down Goliath, which will enable David to behead him.

1: Galleria Borghese

The Villa Borghese, the splendid small palace that hosts the Borghese Gallery, was built at the beginning of the 17th century as a private residence of the Borghese family. From the very beginning it housed the collection of Cardinal Scipio (1579-1633), nephew of Pope Paul V (a Borghese). In 1902, the Italian State purchased the rest of the collection and the palace.

Currently, the collection consists of sculptures, bas-reliefs, ancient mosaics, 16th-17th century paintings, and sculptures. They include masterpieces by Antonello da Messina, Giovanni Bellini, Perugino, Pinturicchio, Veronese, Raphael (Deposition), Domenichino (Diana's Hunt), Titian (Sacred and Profane Love, Venus Blindfolding Love), Correggio (Danae), Caravaggio (Youth with a Fruit Basket, The Madonna of the Footmen, David with Goliath's Head), Rubens (Pietà), and magnificent sculptures by Gian Lorenzo Bernini (Apollo and Daphne, The Rape of Proserpina, David) and Canova (Paolina Borghese).

1: Apollo e Daphne

Apollo and Daphne a marble sculpture in the Baroque style in natural size, made by the Italian artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini and executed in 1622-1625. Placed in the Borghese Gallery in Rome, this work depicts the culmination of the history of Apollo and Daphne (Phoebe and Daphne) in Ovids Metamorphosis.

2: Galleria Borghese

Pauline Bonaparte as Venus Victrix (or Venus Victorious) is a semi-nude life-size neo-Classical portrait sculpture by the Italian sculptor Antonio Canova. It was commissioned by Pauline Bonapartes husband Camillo Borghese and executed in Rome from 1805 to 1808 after she married the representative of the Borghese family. Then, the sculpture moved to Camillos house in Turin, then to Genoa, only arriving in the Galleria Borghese around 1838.

Two Busts of Cardinal Scipione Borghese are marble portrait sculptures created by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in 1632. Both versions of the portrait are located in the Borghese Gallery in Rome.

Truth Unveiled by Time is a marble sculpture by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. It was executed between 1646 and 1652. The artist wanted to show Truth allegorically, as a naked young lady being unveiled by a Time figure above her. However, a figure of Time was never executed. Bernini managed to express his idea by adding the figure in 1665.

5: Galleria Borghese

David is a life-size marble sculpture by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Cardinal Scipione Borghese commissioned it to decorate the Borghese Gallery. The masterpiece was completed in seven months, from 1623 to 1624. The main subject of the sculpture is the biblical David, about to throw the stone that will bring down Goliath, which will enable David to behead him.
