Inside the Basilica there is the Porziuncola Chapel; the place most loved by Saint Francis and where God granted him special graces. Initially, the Porziuncola was an ancient chapel, surrounded by a small portion of forest (hence perhaps the name) belonging to the Benedictines of the Monastery of S. Benedetto del Monte Subasio. Having remained abandoned for a long time, it was restored by Francesco who rented it from Abbot Teobaldo. After the death of the Saint, some permanent buildings arose around the church: the friars' choir, various small oratories and then a small convent. In the second half of the 1500s Pius V ordered the construction of a large basilica that would enclose and protect the Porziuncola and welcome the crowds of pilgrims who continually flocked there.30 minutes -Admission Ticket Included2: Basilica di Santa ChiaraThe Basilica of Santa Chiara is a religious building, built in neo-Romanesque style, located in Assisi. The basilica is among the most famous in Italy and one of the most beautiful in Umbria. The church marks not only the historic center of the city but also a significant place from an artistic and cultural point of view.
The Basilica of Santa Chiara was built by the Benedictine monks, who had the desire to honor Santa Chiara, born Agnese in 1194 and died on 13 September 1253. Currently, together with the Porziuncola, the Eremo delle Carceri, the Chiesa Nuova and the Basilica of San Damiano, the Cathedral of San Rufino and obviously the Basilica of San Francesco, is one of the centers where the pilgrimage to Assisi is concentrated.15 minutes -Admission Ticket Free3: Pinacoteca Comunale Palazzo VallemaniSplendid baroque residence with frescoed vaults at the beginning of the seventeenth century by Umbrian and Tuscan painters. Is the Pinacoteca Comunale di Assisi, inside they are a conspicuous group of medieval and Renaissance frescoes.15 minutes -Admission Ticket Not Included4: Basilica Papale e Sacro Convento di San Francesco d'AssisiThe Basilica of San Francesco d'Assisi, the place that has preserved the mortal remains of the seraphic saint since 1230, is one of the most important places of worship in Italy and the world. In 2000, the basilica was included in the UNESCO world heritage list.
The first stone of the Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi was laid on 16 July 1228, just two days after Francis' death and the day after his proclamation as a saint by Pope Gregory IX. According to tradition, it was Francis himself who indicated exactly the place where he wished to be buried.
The church represents one of the cornerstones of the spread of Gothic in Italy. In addition to being the burial place of Saint Francis, it assumed fundamental importance for the papacy, which saw the Franciscan order as a great ally for strengthening ties with the humblest and most popular classes. The construction of the basilica was started in 1228 by Pope Gregory IX and then consecrated in 1253 by Pope Innocent IV.1 hour -Admission Ticket Included5: Parrocchia Santa Maria Maggiore - Frati Cappuccini AssisiDiscover the tomb of Carlo Acutis at Santa Maria Maggiore in Assisi. Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels ,
After the death of Saint Francis in 1226, the friars built several small huts around the Porziuncola. In 1230, a refectory and some adjacent buildings were added. In the course of time, little porticoes and accommodations for the friars were added around the Porziuncola. Some foundations of these were discovered during excavations under the floor of the present basilica between 1967 and 1969.
As vast numbers of pilgrims came flocking to Assisi to receive the "Pardon of Assisi" the small space of the Porziuncola became completely inadequate to house all these pilgrims. The necessity grew to build a church incorporating the Porziuncola. The buildings around the shrine were taken down by order of Pope Pius V (1566-1572), except the Chapel of the Transito, the cell in which St. Francis had died. Construction of the basilica started on 25 March 1569.30 minutes -Admission Ticket Free2: Basilica di Santa ChiaraVisit the church of Santa Chiara , The church was built, after the death of Santa Chiara, between 1257 and 1265, around the ancient church of San Giorgio, which until 1230 had kept the mortal remains of St. Francis15 minutes -Admission Ticket Free3: Pinacoteca Comunale Palazzo Vallemanisplendid baroque residence with frescoed vaults at the beginning of the seventeenth century by Umbrian and Tuscan painters - the Pinacoteca Comunale di Assisi is on display, which includes a conspicuous group of medieval and Renaissance frescoes10 minutes -Admission Ticket Not Included4: Basilica Papale e Sacro Convento di San Francesco d'AssisiThe mystic town of Saint Francis, sill surrounded by its ancient walls, built on the green slopes of Mount Subasio, with its colourful houses of ink stone. For centuries the Forum was the center of day-to-day life in Rome: the site of triumphal processions and elections; the venue for public speeches, criminal trials, and gladiatorial matches; and the nucleus of commercial affairs. Here statues and monuments commemorated the city's great men. The teeming heart of ancient Rome, it has been called the most celebrated meeting place in the world, and in all history. Located in the small valley between the Palatine and Capitoline Hills, the Forum today is a sprawling ruin of architectural fragments and intermittent archaeological excavations attracting 4.5 million or more sightseers yearly.1 hour -Admission Ticket Included3: Trevi FountainA little more walking brings you to the Trevi Fountain, which famously featured in Fellinis La Dolce Vita. Since that time, the chapel has served as a place of both religious and functionary papal activity. Today, it is the site of the papal conclave, the process by which a new pope is selected.
