Salé sits across the Bou Regreg River from Morocco`s capital, Rabat, and although Salé is its sister city, it is a historic gem in its own right. This beautiful city was the capital of the short-lived pirate Republic of Salé in the 17th century, and was the place where the first anti-colonial demonstrations against France took place. Just a hop, skip and a jump away from Salé sits the Chellah, an ancient Phoenician and Roman city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Long overlooked in favor of Rabat, Salé exudes a character and charm all its own.
