Inverness

The capital of the Highlands, Inverness is one of the oldest inhabited sites in Scotland. Don't miss the oldest church, Old High Church, on St Michael's Mount by the riverside, a site used for worship since Celtic times. Other interesting sights include Inverness Castle, from which Mary, Queen of Scots was infamously barred; and Urquhart Castle, south of the city, which was a formidable fortress in the Middle Ages. Inverness is a good base for exploring the Highlands.

Wick

Located on the eastern coastline of Caithness, the old port of Wick is a popular stop for those heading north to explore what's often called the John o'Groats Peninsula. The main attraction is the Old Castle Wick, also known as the Old Man of Wick, dating back to the 13th century. You can also visit two other castles in the area: Castle Girnigoe and Castle Sinclair. Wick also includes Pulteneytown with the Old Pulteney whisky distillery. The Wick Heritage Museum houses some interesting artifacts.

Thurso

Thurso is a great base for exploring the surrounding countryside. There is plenty to see and do in and around the delightful town of Thurso. Other great must-sees are the circular wellhouse of Meadow Well, a fine public library and the impressive Janet Street overlooking the River Thurso close to Thurso Bridge. Caithness Horizons is also well worth a visit with fascinating museum exhibits and a changing annual gallery programme.

Tain

This small but thriving town, situated on the south shore of Dornoch Firth, is Scotland's oldest royal burgh. Steeped in dramatic history and scenic landscape, the town boasts spectacular architecture, a great array of wildlife and a wide range of sporting and leisure activities for everyone. The many interesting and unusual buildings and hidden-away corners of Tain, including the Old Town Hall, the Royal Hotel, the parish church and the museum as well as the more modest houses and commercial premises, were all built by the Maitland family of architects in the late 19th century and have a distinctive appearance.

Dingwall

Dingwall. This lovely market town sits at the head of the Cromarty Firth in Ross-shire.
