There are no motorized vehicles on the Phi Phi Islands, the only way to get around once on these idyllic islands is by foot, bicycle and boat. The islands are made up of six individual islands that can only be reached by boat, long tail wooden boats and speedboats provide trips to these destinations and once there the only way to explore is by walking.

Access to the islands is primarily made from either Phuket or Krabi which both offer daily ferries and speedboats to Tonsai Pier on Koh Phi Phi Don. The ferry ride from Phuket takes roughly 2 hours and about 90 minutes from Krabi.

On the islands, you have to walk around to get to where you want to be, with no public transport it is necessary to walk from place to place, nothing is more than a 10-minute walk away. When visiting the other even more remote islands walking around is required to explore the beaches and surroundings. Hiking through the many hills and signature limestone cliffs in the area is a great way to see the island and tropical surroundings. There are coastal paths that lead to beaches and up to the Phi Phi Viewpoint which is the highest point on the island.

A bicycle is a great way to explore the islands of Phi Phi with no other traffic to contend with riding a bike around the towns and beach areas provides visitors with spectacular scenic surroundings.

The main port for arrivals and departures on the Phi Phi Islands is located in Tonsai Bay, the Tonsai Pier is where ferries drop off and pick up passengers transporting them to and from the mainland (Krabi or Phuket) and to and from the other islands.

These wooden boats are the traditional way of getting around the Phi Phi Islands. You will find them at the Tonsai Pier and at many of the beaches lined up and waiting to transport you to your required destination. Prices run around THB100-200, it is definitely worth negotiating a price before getting on board. A typical day trip on board one of these boats will cost approximately THB1,200 for around 6 hours.

Speedboats also transport visitors from Phuket and Krabi to Koh Phi Phi Don arriving at the Tonsai Pier. Day trips can be made on speedboats to island hop or spend a day snorkeling, scuba diving, rock climbing, etc.
