The Hokey Pokey Water Taxi operates between Placencia and Independence (Mango Creek), this will save you from a long detour by road for travelers between Punta Gorda and Placencia. You can rent a car from one of the rental agencies located at Belize National Airport. Make sure to ask for directions and head out on the road. The fastest way to get from Belize City to Placencia is the Hummingbird and Souther Highways. These roads are paved well and the signs are consistent. Once you turn off the main highways that you're likely to encounter bumpy, dusty, winding roads. Make sure your rental car is a sturdy 4x4 to navigate the bumpy conditions. For your safety, try to drive only during the daylight hours.
