GETTING AROUND - PLACENCIA

By Taxi

Taxi rides from town to the airstrip cost about BZ$12 for one or two people, to the Seine Bight area one-way about BZ$24, to Maya Beach about BZ$30. Ask around the gas station and tourist office, and look for posted rate lists to know what you should be paying. The most trusted and long-standing taxi services include Radiance Ritchie (tel. 501/523-3321), Traveling Gecko (tel. 501/523-4078). and Noel Taxi Service (tel. 501/600-6047 or 501/632- 0980).

By Golf Cart

Another great option is to rent a golf cart to get around. Rentals cost about BZ$100 per day. There are several options for renting, Captain Jacks (tel. (501) 628-6447) and Barefoot Rentals and Services (tel. 501 523-3066) have a good reputation.

By Water Taxi

The Hokey Pokey Water Taxi operates between Placencia and Independence (Mango Creek), this will save you from a long detour by road for travelers between Punta Gorda and Placencia. Taxis run from 6:30 am until 7:45 pm and costs BZ$10. Water taxis take about 15 minutes to reach their destination.

By Walking

Placencia is a fairly small town and walking is a good option. The peninsula is a very safe area as there is only one road in and out. Be sure to take precautions after dark because some areas are not lit well.

By Bicycles

A great option is to rent a bike for about BZ$20 per day (many hotels even offer them for free for guests). There are several options for renting, Captain Jacks (tel. (501) 628-6447) and Barefoot Rentals and Services (tel. 501 523-3066) have a good reputation.

By Rental Car

You can rent a car from one of the rental agencies located at Belize National Airport. Make sure to ask for directions and head out on the road. The fastest way to get from Belize City to Placencia is the Hummingbird and Souther Highways. These roads are paved well and the signs are consistent. Once you turn off the main highways that you're likely to encounter bumpy, dusty, winding roads. Make sure your rental car is a sturdy 4x4 to navigate the bumpy conditions. For your safety, try to drive only during the daylight hours.
