ISLA HOLBOX - GETTING AROUND
Isla Holbox is a small, car-free island where walking is often the best way to explore its charming sandy streets and laid-back atmosphere. The main town, Holbox, is compact and easily navigable, with most hotels, restaurants, and shops located within walking distance of the ferry terminal. The beach is also just a short stroll from the town center, making it convenient for visitors to move between the town's key areas.
Walking is a great way to soak in the island's relaxed vibe and enjoy its colorful street art, friendly local scene, and picturesque coastline. However, if you are staying at accommodations farther down the beach, such as near Punta Mosquito or Punta Cocos, walking may not be practical for longer distances, and alternative transportation options are recommended.
Golf carts are the most popular mode of transportation on Isla Holbox, providing a fun and flexible way to explore the island beyond the town center. Golf carts can be rented by the hour, half-day, or full day, with rental agencies located near the ferry terminal and throughout Holbox Village. Rental rates typically range from 200 to 300 MXP ($12-$18) per hour and between 1,200 and 1,500 MXP ($72-$90) for a full day.
Driving a golf cart allows visitors to reach more distant parts of the island, such as Punta Cocos for sunset views or Punta Mosquito for birdwatching and exploring sandbars. Golf carts are easy to operate, but it is important to follow local driving guidelines and be mindful of pedestrians and cyclists while navigating the sandy paths.
Bicycles are another excellent option for getting around Isla Holbox. Bicycle rentals are widely available in Holbox Village, with rental rates typically ranging from 150 to 300 MXP ($9-$18) per day.
Cycling is a great way to visit the island's more remote beaches, including Punta Cocos and Punta Mosquito, while enjoying the natural beauty of the surrounding mangroves and coastal areas. While most of the island's streets are sandy and easy to navigate, be aware that some paths may become muddy or uneven after heavy rain.
The ferry between Isla Holbox and the mainland town of Chiquilá provides a reliable and essential link for travelers. Ferries operate regularly throughout the day, with departures approximately every 30 minutes during peak hours. The ferry ride takes around 20 to 30 minutes, offering scenic views of the Caribbean waters along the way.
Two primary companies operate the ferry service: Holbox Express and 9 Hermanos, both of which provide comfortable seating and efficient service. One-way tickets typically cost around 220 MXP ($13) for adults and slightly less for children. The ferry terminal in Holbox is conveniently located near Holbox Village.
Upon arrival in Chiquilá, travelers can access buses, private transfers, and taxis to reach popular destinations such as Cancún, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum. If you plan to continue your journey beyond Chiquilá, it is advisable to arrange onward transportation in advance.
